DYNO RUNS

Post by quovadis » Thu Mar 04, 2004 4:48 am

Not that i understand much about dynos because this is the first time i have dynoed the car.
We tried a run without air blowing into the intercooler and got 387 at the wheel....after that we tried with air rushing into the new intercooler and got 431 at the wheel.
I think that at the wheel and at the engine are not the same measurements...not quite sure what MTM gives me when they say 458 horsepower with chip and exhaust?

We also tried a run with the aquamist and the car lost 10 horses...the explanation here is that the car ran slightly lean to start off with, and the aquamist made the mixture richer, hence a loss of HP.
Anyway seems the new intercooler is impressive when it has air running through it that is...

Any comments on these figures? I post the pics in my gallery

thanks

MTM Stage III 458hp is at the Flywheel, deduct ~27% for drivetrain loss for Wheel HP (WHP).

if i understand correctly MTM stage 3 is 458 at the crank.
i have 387 and 431 at the wheel, so i would have 510-580 at the crank.
My car is running lean though..i need custom tuning.

really really NOT recommended - Never dyno a turbocharged car (especially an RS4) without a cold air flow. Do you know how quickly the air intake temp rises on a RS4? Untold damage could be done. Even with 2 x 100mph Maha fans on a 15 second dyno run the air intake temp rises by at least 40 degrees on mine . Without fans this is V dangerous.

Impressive figures mate, very good.

Have you still got hte standard clutch or if not what have you got, can we have a list?

Sorry if you have posted this elsewhere and I have not read it

Thats pretty amazing figures without cooling gino
It would suggest a much higher BHP at the wheels if cooling was in place, what was the outside ambient temp?
How accurate is the RR ?
And what other improvements have you made to the gear box to deal with that much power?
Cheers

The clutch is a semi-racing clutch made here by a guy in california. I have no idea how long it will last, have not had any problems with it so far.
We have not made any modifications to the gear box and i am worried about this.
Actually what is interesting here is that the extra horsepower above the stage 3 MTM seems to be generated by the the intercooler.
I am very sorry but i screwed up in saying that one run was with air and without air....i spoke to my tech again this morning and all runs were with air he says.
Ambient temp was 26 degrees celcius yesterday, and two rather small fans were aimed at front of the car and were blowing throughout the test.
The LAST RUN WAS WITH A FROZEN INTERCOOLER CORE.
In other words the last run would have simulated cold european winter weather.
By the way GO FIGURE THIS OUT....we also did a run with the aquamist turned on...the aquamist HAD A MIXTURE of 50% distilled water and 50% methanol.

We lost 10 horsepower, and got 380 at the wheel.
I was told that my car was running lean and the fact of using the aquamist made the mixture richer and there was a loss in horsepower.
Either way, having thought about this whole episode i can conclude that the MTM programm is too agressive for florida weather, even with the new intercooler.
This is why i want sportec to come and tune the car hre in florida.
Next week i am buying a palm pilot wit the new VAG software and shall monitor the car correctly.
I don't trust these dynos.
Another factor which is in contradiction is that all tests were run in 3rd gear and apprently on audi's 4rth gear should be used.
Either way, i think the car is running too much power.
The good thing up till now is that we have monitored the exhaust temperature guage and it does not go over 1200 1300 degrees farenheit which seems very cool, so i am told.
I do not have enough experience with these figures anyhow.

yeah ..all the wankers here are very fond of the 1/4 mile.
Actually some guys have monster mustangs and mitsubishi eclipses with 900 horsepower.
The problem with these guys, is that by the time their wheels have stopped spinning, i'm already at the other end of the quarter mile run, having a beer.

Good luck Gino, any time you can get 380-390WHP you are doing great things. As for custom tuning, hope to see you in colorado in April. Hey, they are picking mine up , they can swing by and pick yours up after that.

Happy tuning.....

Phew...... thought you were on a suicide mission there! Beleive it or not there are a couple of RR'ds in this country that either have inefficient or don't have any fans!!

Ya, Eric knows me well, I call him about once a week to hassle him. He can tell ya, I'm up in 10K lakes ( MN ). I am having my car picked up on the 13th. Looks like Gunther will be in Colorado @ April 5th. I am having ASW do some mods to it before the final tune so they want the car there earlier to have time to drop the engine , add some goodies and then bolt together before Gunther arrives. I plan to fly out after tuning is completed and drive it back to MN.
