I was speaking to the guys at Camberley Audi yesterday and was told that the only thing SW0090 does is raise the revs and fuelling on coldstarts, so surely by removing the high startup revs you effectively negate the SW upgrade?

Yes, mostly you do. But with the added more linear throttle map you get a much more driveable car on cold starts - more so than SW0090 provided.

I beg to differ with the guys at Camberley Audi.

The fuelling strategy with SW0090 is quite different;
1) since having SW0090 my mpg has improved by over 10%; and

2) the exhaust note is completely different being sharper, louder and more aggressive (accelerating away from the autoroute toll booths last summer was utterly addictive and so much more fun that it had been the previous 3 years when I has SW0080).

it is more than that - the software changes as well as the maps - just log a sw0080 and 90 and plot the logs and you can see the difference - whether the software just smooths recorded data or it is actually running smoother is hard to say.
