Thanks for your replies. The phoney witness strategy is one that crossed my mind but I decided against it, although only because I can't be 100% sure which day it happened on [img]images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]
I've decided to go the honest route and after phoning the council I got the name and address of their insurance assessor. I have gently reminded them that the driver had a legal obligation to stop at the scene, so if they don't wish to co-operate with me I may have to get the police involved. Worth a try eh?

Assuming the council driver hasn't tried to cover his tracks i.e. mask the damage to the council vehicle, the council vehicle should have comparible damage to yours.
It shouldn't require an expert to confirm it was about the same height as your damage.
I would have thought the fact about who was driving is irrelevant when it comes to compensation for the damage to your car.

Well it seems honesty pays.
The insurance co-ordinator at the council couldn't have been more helpful - I got an estimate for the repairs (arround £500) and sent a copy both to him and to their insurers (Zurich Municipal). While the council traced the driver of the bus (the note had the correct registration), Zurich processed the claim.
Today Zurich phone me to tell me to accept the £500 estimate and they will sort it out with the bodyshop (which luckily was on their approved list). I can only guess the driver must have confessed, after all it won't cost him anything, and when I sent Zurich a copy of the note the story was complete. I can only guess that my story was so flimsy they must have thought I couldn't be making it up [img]images/graemlins/nodder.gif[/img] Very happy [img]images/graemlins/clap.gif[/img] [img]images/graemlins/jump3.gif[/img]
