S2 Avant Buying advice needed

Post by JohnW » Tue Feb 17, 2004 12:16 pm

Hi Guys (and gals),

A friend is about to go look at an N plate S2 with 110k miles, priced around £6k5.

His only concern is whether it is "likely to cost big bills for broken oily bits".

Does the above price sound sensible ?
Anything he should look out for - like known problems, expensive bits that always break, etc.

Alternatively, anyone know of a good clean low miler at sensible money (his limit is 8k tops).

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,
John.

John,

the mileage is not intergalactic, and the price very reasonable for an Avant, but it all depends on the service history etc. of the car. The engine, gearbox and suspension should all last forever if properly looked after, rust is rarely a problem and the electrics seem to hold up OK, mine is a similar age and mileage and apart from a frozen rear caliper it has been trouble free. Best place to look for advice above and beyond here is the dedicated S2 forum, http://www.s2forum.com/ and the buyers guide at http://www.s2central.net/ or http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/ . From memory, the things to look out for are whinny/smokey turbos, check that the timing chain has been replaced and theat there are no leaks around the power steering system, especially the pump.

Thanks Steve.

My mate has joined rs246 now, and has already headed off to check out the buying guide you've posted a link to above.
No doubt he'll pop in and ask questions for himself from now on (You lazy Git Alan ).

Btw, I remember you from posting on the Corrado Club forum

Cheers,

Cheers John, I'll let you get on with your mountain of work

Steve, the car in question does have a fAsh, but at the minute is "In the workshop, cos it was running slightly lumpy" It has very few receipts, since apparently it has never gone wrong, so I was a little concerned that I would pay £6.5k for the car, and then same again on wet bits??

Phrases like "New", "Turbo" & "Timing chains" scare me to death, especially with Audi's renowned pricing structure.

You won't be going to audi for servicing - it's too much and those "technicians" probably have only worked on a couple of S2s - you need to find a respected specialist with S2 knowlegde.

Find out exactly what the car is in the workshop for. It has to have had a cambelt change - if it isn't in the service book and there is no recepit walk away - why would a loving car owner not keep receipts or have it in the book?

You could ask the guys on www.s2forum.com if they know the car or have seen it before - there are a lot of guys there that would be willing to look at the car with you to give a 2nd opinion. There is an S2 meet with 20 or so cars attending at the end of feb - might be worthwhile attending to get more info on the cars.

What Doug said. Most Audi main dealers do not know their way around the older cars, I have a service due imminently and am really having to think hard about maintaining my Audi service history or going somewhere where they know what they are doing, also had a bad experience last time. Parts are expensive from Audi, much less from www.VAGparts.com etc., so don't be too put off by the fact that it is an older car, they really did screw them together well in those days, and it shows.

@Webbo, small world, eh? Do you still have your Corrado?

Certainly is
No mate, The VR go sold in September last year. I brought an RS4 back in June and the car count exceeded the threshold, so some toys had to be sold
That and needing the money/space to complete some building work.

Had it for 7 years though, so musn't grumble, eh.
I still see Dom, Guy, Glenn etc quite regularly,
so keep up with what is going on with you guys.
Looking forward to the next bournemouth weekender

Take it easy mate,
