Anyone upgraded from the A4 Avant Bose install

Post by romario » Tue Feb 17, 2004 9:50 pm

Wondering if anyone on this forum has upgraded the audio system beyond the OEM Bose installation.
I have a 2001 RS4 with the Symphony headunit and Bose all round. Having played with the hidden EQ settings on this headunit I am still missing the mid-range of my existing Alpine/Phoenix Gold/Diamond Audio install.
I may retain the Symphony system as the Alpine head unit has been playing up but how easy is it to remove this Bose system. I cannot find the amplifier and believe these speakers are active, makes sense given the hidden EQ lets you tweak just 4 bands for front and back.
I live in Bucks and will probably get this refit done professionally so if you've used any specialists who have worked on this car set-up before and achieved impressive results please let me know.

Cheers,
James

The Sound Gallery in High Wycombe have a good reputation.

Thanks MOG, Sound Gallery fitted my home system but yet to try them for car installs, I'll pop down A40 later.
Only other dealer I have heard about is Ace Audio Ltd, who did another Goodwood Green RS4 recently.

I'm getting scared off changing anything. Sound Gallery suggested the headunit is poor at best and Audi don't use the pre-outs mentioned in the owners manual prefering to send an amplified signal to the Bose sub/amp which drops it back to line level before amplifying them again, all to help noise supression. Also the CAN system Audi utilise means changing the headunit completely is a bit of a pain as there are no ignition switch wires or lighting leads to dim the new headunits glow when lights go on etc.
I am really disappointed with the Bose as typically my cars have had a few grands worth of aftermarket audio. The noise from the factory Bose speakers is particularly odd in what is otherwise a high quality motorcar.
I'll call the dealer in Reading and listen to their opinion.
Cheers,
James
