Benefits of a remap

Many of you have had your RS4s remapped. What are the pros and cons of a remap and would it affect warranty, insurance, MOT, etc?

Not worth it unless you have modified the air coming in or going out of the engine on a n/a car i.e ram air of exhaust.. It will affect warranty and insurance, you always advise insurers of a modification from OEM.

Warranty if they found out YES
Insurance definately would be voided if they found out and you'd not declared it.
MOT no problem

Pro's are :

Improved fuel ecomomy (personally dont beleive that on a petrol)
Better torque
Engine more revvy and pulls harder.

Cons:
expensive for not much BHP but then its not about figures on N/A cars.

And as above..... pretty pointless on N/A unless you improve on air in and out!

The reason you get better mpg on a lot of tuned cars, petrol and diesel, is that the car runs more timing, more torque, works more efficently and because of that you have your foot on the throttle less to get to normal speeds. You use the power, you use the fuel though.

On B7s you get full throttle in the 1st 3 gears so you get a good bit more available torque if peak torque/power numbers are not hugelyt increased. The more linear throttle also gets rid of the kangarooing at low revs , so easier to drive sensibly.

Exactly why i dont beleive it...... Because all my mapped cars have been way worse MPG.
















You do get more MPG when you drive it like you stole it dont you! lol

Once you have had a remap you wont go back to OEM software (if car is modified). I did when I had to upload 0090, it was horrid.

Doug, why did the factory limit throttle in 1-3 even with all wheel drive?Always mystfied me?
Any downsides to not having that restriction?

Probably to protect the drivetrain.

Exactly that - it's to reduce the torque load on the gearbox in the lower gears (which gets multipled from engine torque by the gear ratio, so the effect is much lower in higher gears), and reduce the risk of warranty claims on the gearbox.

Remember the protoype V12 diesel R8? That was seriously limited in the lower gears to avoid totally destroying the gearbox.

So, if the torque restriction is removed via remapping, doesn't this increase the chances of destroying your gearbox? Are folks that have had a remap not phased by this?

More likely so it is not faster than the supposedly supercar that has the same engine. Common practise on audis to keep the hatchbacks and saloons slower than the sportscar models.

BMW used to de-tune their diesels so they didn't outperform the equivalent petrol versions.

I would imagine also it is to allow a safety margin for a car that is running on poor petrol, infrequently serviced & a driver with limited mechanical sympathy, re-mapped cars will most likely be better taken care of so drive train abuse etc. is less of a risk

I think the weak link is the clutch,ive never heard of a box failure on here and theres plenty of big milers out there now not to mention well abused ones,clutches have been known to go at low mileage even on standard cars.My car is mapped amongst many other things and to gain grunt lower down in the most important real world gears it was and still is a no brainer for me

Have I missed something? Is the MRC map limited in 1-3?
