HELP - being told disks and pads are shot!!
HELP - being told disks and pads are shot!!
Hi guys - has anyone had anything like this happen?
My DRC problem kicked in in Nov i.e. just before snow. Audi have taken ages to order/deliver the parts. I had driven it on a less and less basis through December as it sounded worse and worse - but it had moved every week or two.
When I drove it into the dealer 'cos the part had finally arrived it was making a grindy noise on the brakes but that's to be expected as the disks had rusted up some.
The dealer is now trying to tell me that the pads have stuck to the disks, front and rear, and that I need new pads, disks et el!!! grrr!
Surely if that was happeneing I wouldn't have been able to drive out of my road let alone 8 miles to their shop - and they've only had it a week!
Is that reasonable or are they having me on??!?!?!??!

Tonbridge - but in fairness to them, I'm looking to see if you guys think it's a common occurrence with this car and I shouldn't be upset (obviously if I'm £2k+ down I'm gonna be upset, but maybe with myself for not keeping the brakes clean?).

Do some emergency stops to shine up the discs again.
2007 RS4 Avant in Mugello Blue + Milltek non-res valved, MRC air filter, MRC remap with silent-mode startup

Good suggestion but they have the car. I'll go down there and look before I agree to parting with that much cash though.Do some emergency stops to shine up the discs again.
Ha!! Got a clarification from them today - the pads HAD stuck to the disks but are free now. They are saying the problem is with the ridges on the disks that the sticking has left.
I quizzed them about skimming and the admitted that it could be done but they didn't do it - hmmm, that means it's okay to scare me with potential £2000+ costs does it?
So! - can anyone recommend a good shop for skimming disks in North West Kent? (Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, etc.)
(I found this site - http://www.skimmydiscs.co.uk/Find%20a%20lathe2.html - and the Porsche dealers next door to Tonbridge Audi are listed - I hate to think what they charge, still, worth a call I guess).

You just have to check if they only have a Pro-cut on disc lathe. That is good for fixed one piece discs but the only way to skim fronts is by taking them off because the are floating. Better to have them refaced as well because a lathe can hit the crossdrilled holes and produce a ghosting pattern on the discs.
Price wise for skimming itself alone should be max. £100 per pair.

audi dealerships thnk customers should take the same approcah as them with their warranty.
if in doubt, replace with new, which short term is great if your in warranty, but for discs and other consumables, its bloody expensive.
i absolutely always research problems on here first, and then if necessary get a second opinion from a worthy independant.

Thanks all! I collected the car, vibration was pretty bad. I took it for a blast - hard stops x 4 or 5 and magically (and luckily) the problem is magically fixed!
£2.5k better of and significantly wiser.... thanks to the forum - boo to the workshop!
