anyone _know all_ about car stereo's?

Post by fade2grey » Thu Feb 05, 2004 7:42 pm

I've found this a nice MP3 playing changer from Sony (the Sony CDX-757MX) I've also seen it on a site somewhere with all the gubbins to be a direct fit to replace the existing std fit changer. Question is.. is there some black art adaptor lead that I cant get hold of to justify the extra few hundred quid in the price? or is it something I can get from my local car audio place? - I'm really missing my mp3s & like the standard look of the dash.

answers on a post card..

That Phatbox looked like a good solution to me if you're looking for a new MP3 solution...someone on here has one fitted - apparently plugs straight in as a replacement for your CD changer and you can plug the module into your PC to upload your songs...

You'd be talking about Peterb with his rather lovely RS6. I've heard of the PhatBox being plugged straight in as a replacement for the standard cahnger on a few occasions. It's all good

I think what you need is one of these link
Basically the same changer is about £50 cheaper on its own. But to make it compatable you need an "interface" which fits between the Sony lead (same system as Blaupunkt)and the 20 pin plug on the back of your head unit. You then will need to run the Sony system cable from the interface to wher you have the changer. I don't think you can get an interface that fits at that end - which is a shame if you already have an autochanger cable fitted. But it may be worth trying here
Hope this helps

Peter,

Quick question about your Phatbox...does it display the mp3 artist/track info in on the head unit ?? - Seems to me it'd be very difficult to navigate a couple of hundred albums without and text ?

I know it does with some head units...just not sure about the Audi ones...

Dave.

No, none of the Audi HUs have the capability of displaying track info etc., so there's nothing the PhatBox can do to get around this. Navigating through the tracks is done with voice prompts - it's not too difficult, and when you get used to it, you can do it without taking your eyes off the road. You can step through albums/artists/tracks/genres alphabetically, starting with an initial letter search. Personally, I don't bother too much - most of the time I just let it play in sequence. At the computer, you can set up your own playlists, so you can set up lists for different moods/times of day/whatever.
