Roof-Mounted DVD Player

Post by cobraBLACK » Thu Nov 25, 2010 3:41 pm

We had a 'NESA' roof-mounted DVD player in our S4 B6 Avant when we bought it but it turns out it doesn't work (the unit functions, it just doesn't read discs properly).

Although it looks fairly cheap (compared to in-home players) aesthetically it fits really nicely, even looking nearly OEM.

I'd like a functioning one for our long drive to central France at Christmas as our little one won't be happy about sitting still for hours.

Has anyone had any experience with roof-mounted units?

Are they as straightforward to swap out as after-market head units?

Any model recommendations?

They do get in the way of your rear view badly. If you don't wan't a perm dual headrest setup for about £250 off eBay or Amazon then the velcro on options really aren't bad at all. Personally I use 2 velcro on jobbies so they can be used in either my car or the wifes, but they don't exactly look OEM ;)

The one I've got's fine.

The only time I ever notice it is on the odd occasion when it starts whirring for no reason when I turn the ignition on.

Be interested in getting a roof mount one myself as I have to make a very similar trip in July next year.
I already have a Phillips player which attaches to the headrest for my 5 year old, http://www.amazon.co.uk/PHILIPS-PET830- ... B000QF4M5S but it was pricey at £180, albeit very good quality (and it went to Australia long haul, so its served its purpose)
However, my 2 year old cant see it as it's on the other side of the car, so I'm thinking instead of spending for another single player, it would be easier to have a roof mounted one instead. (just less stuff to lug round as well)

Is the rear visibilty badly affected? And do the kids mind staring up at the roof? (sore neck etc?)

As I said, I don't notice when I'm driving. It's never worked though so it's never been tested.

If it were on the headrest or on the roof, he'd still have to look up so I don't think it would make a lot of difference. I'd have to make sure the viewing angle was good though, otherwise it's pointless for children.

Annoying too as I finally found a use for the extra DVD you get with Disney/Pixar Blu-Rays!

After the question of visibility was raised I actually took notice:

I couldn't see it in the mirror whether I sat up straight so my head touched the ceiling or ducked down like a little fella, adjusting the mirror.

I guess it's because the ceiling's so high (I assume it's the same in a saloon; not so much in a cab!).

That's good to know, I've had one in a previous car in it blocked a good portion of my rear view. What size screen does yours have?

Dunno. I'll measure it at lunch.

I measured diagonally (I think that's right) and it was just over 9" visible screen.
