Why Did you buy your RS6

Post by Fingers01 » Sun Nov 14, 2010 7:04 pm

For me it was the car I always wanted. But the funds and opportunity never coincided at the same time. I just love the understated look of the C5, pretty scarce as well.

The heritage, the Brand, the memory of the raging bull adverts and the best strapline ,for me that is, in car marketing "Vorsprung Durch Tecnik".

I look for any excuse to drive it.

Oh yes before i forget the 450 BHP and just so much torque and acceleration have nothing to do with it of course [bollox!!!!].It's a nice family estate and very practical.

So come on Why did you buy yours?

My 2-door coupe was heading into retirement, and after many hours on Autotrader/Pistonheads etc, search had to be V8 (or above) and up to £25k.

A brief fascination with the Vauxhall Monaro passed and with news of our first baby due early next year, ideas of Maserati 4200's, Merc CL 600s (the ones with the twin-turbos, but far too much Walnut on the dash for somebody under the age of 40!!!) also passed leaving the RS6 as the obvious 'sensible' option.

Added bonus that it sounds awesome and plops all over my best mate's M3!!! Even quicker than my other mate's Porsche 911 997 Carrera 4S (on paper, and in a straight line - but that's just being picky) that cost him £50k!!!

Added feeling of driving something pretty rare on the UK roads (never seen another one to wave to while I've been driving mine). Also never attracts unwanted attention that other 450bhp cars would do, so I can leave it in the supermarket carpark wihtout worrying too much.

Looked at loads of cars, nearly bought a tvr t350 for speed and driving fun but knew it would at some point fall apart. Thought about m3 or m5 but had a BMW years ago and probably worst car I have had - plus I see loads on the road.
Got overtaken by a red rs4 on the motorway and though "wow that must be worth a look". Started looking online and found this site. Read a post about if an rs4 owner should get a 6 and was amazed by the response!
Done my homework, decided I wanted an avus saloon with black interior and 9 months later (test drove a few just to get a feel for the cars) the rest is history!
Ticks every single box, has the speed of the tvr, build quality typical of audi and am always surprised how small nimble and responsive it drives for such a big old unit!
Oh and forgot to mention exclusivity - I may have my figures wrong here but I believe there were about 7000 c5 RS6's made, the last 1500 were plus models which leaves 5500 cars. I am guessing savants out sold saloons by say 5-1 so we are talking really limited numbers!

I brought my 6 because I was using my m3 instead of the q7 because as there was only myself at home during the week it really was too big just for me. I have always loved the c5 shape previously owning an a6 2.8qs man avant from new. So I thought about looking to buy her back but then I thought why am I going to do this when I can actually get the car I really really wanted. Did my homework asked questions and went to see an rs6 ..............drove her, after 40ft I knew this was the car for me and left the q7 at the car dealers without regret (I did actually do a proper test drive) ;) Do I regret my disission? NO WAY 8)

Such a stealth beast for £40k, with kidney crushing performance and a great spec. At the time unquestionably the car to buy.
Present:...
Lotus Evora GT410 Sport, Caterham 420R, CCM Spitfire, VW T2 Bay Window 1976

Past:
DB11 AMR, 992, 991.2, Yamaha MT01, 640d Gran Coupe, 635d Coupe, RS6 C5, Audi TT 225 Coupe, Astra with wind up windows, Citroen ZX, Rover 213, yes behold, a Rover 213... Renault 5

I've worked for Audi since 2002.

I've nearly always needed a car practical enough for an 8st dog.

At the time I had a company car A4 Avant TDi quattro, but owned a series of 911 Carrera 2s. The Dealer principle of our Audi centre had a 52 plate RS6 Avant in Avus with black optics and solar roof. Having borrowed it for a day I knew this was what I needed!

However house purchases, funds etc. meant I bought a B5 S4 Avant and tuned it in the meantime (I still say this was not far off the same performance as the '6), and then a B6 S4 Avant (better chassis and interior, nice engine but needed more torque) at the same time as a 993.

Finally on arrival of Dryburgh jnr I decided the S4 luggage compartment was in no way big enough. So it was sold and I trawled the ads with money burning a hole in my pocket for a Porsche Cayenne S or turbo, convinced this was what I needed as I still had a company car Audi saloon or Avant through this time.

Ultimately having viewed a few I was disgusted by the interior quality and style on the Cayenne, and that left the sensible choice of a C6 Avant 3.0TDi. But who was I kidding - I took the "brain-out" C5 RS6 Avant route having thought I got a good one though good research, only to have the dreaded gearbox and DRC fail in the first 12 months!

Luckily I still work in (what SHOULD be) the best place to have it fixed!?! (don't say it... I know you're all tempted)
