Welky wrote:Yep, get your point but devil's advocate, surely you would brake before you enter a corner, so no lights required and certainly long before the apex when the angle is most obtuse. On a dip, that would have to be a serious incline and climb to cause that much of an angle. Can't argue with you on the roundabout example though, except roundabout mechanics would indicate I would be slowing before crossing your nose and so in most cases observation would alert you to the hazzard.

BUT...I am the first to admit I have not seen the LED lights from an angle and am only going on the photos posted here.

Can one of you fellas post a pic or two from different angles, day and night, brakes on and off so we can get an idea of whether Bam is very wise and I'm an argumentative c..k who'se just pissed €220 up the wall?
Preface: I'm not trying to be a killjoy about this mod and I'm not looking for an argument Welky. I'm usually one of the more easy-going forum users with a level of seriousness best described as "go <beep> yourself". I've read about this issue previously and it concerned me enough to think long and hard before purchasing my rear lens brand. I am not an expert regarding this issue and this is just opinion like any other forum posting.

Conditions can call for you to brake at ANY time.

Point 1: Blind corner AFTER the apex there could be an accident/fox/dog/cat/obstruction/prostitute that would cause you to commit to a partial or full emergency stop.... and I'm following you while giving it a boot-full but the intensity of your rear stop lights is reduced or unseen until I am more in-line with the rear of your car. FAIL.

Point 2: A serious angle? Like a European mountain pass? Coming down a mountain requires more braking force too, hence, longer stop distance. FAIL.

Point 3: You could be taking a roundabout at 25mph as am I, the 'natural' timing of the event would not cause a collision except that all of sudden someone changes lane on you without warning. The only warning I get is your vehicle outline slowing/stopping, at night, and I'm close to perpendicular to your vehicle with no red light disbursement from your rear light. It may not cause our direct collision but it could cause me to change direction enough to cause a separate incident. FAIL.

These are all 'whatifs' and very dependant on certain conditions and situations.

It is my opinion that you ensure the brand of rear C5 LED lens/cluster set hasn't got a viewing angle issue. I've read about this before, I wish I could find the posting about the guy (C5 RS) that removed his rear LED cluster because he found other drivers' behaviour to be dangerous toward him and a number of motorists complaining that his rear light weren't 'on' or bright enough. I'm guessing it is only applicable to some brands or maybe just the saloon's rear curved lens as the avant lens profile is more 'up and down'. The lens kits mentioned in this thread seem sound, probably best to stick to the same stuff, not that I was saying you weren't going to, but, Fleebay is a big place with lots of variations and prices.
This is what forums are for, share the knowledge and look out for your fellow forum monger.

Rant. Over.

You could tell he was braking from 1 light, just wanted to check the other was working as if it was a normal light you'd expect to have seen it both sides from our position...

Good rant indeed! So good in fact that I can't be arsed to reply to all your points so instead I'm just going to agree with them, not to be annoying but because I really do see your point. Otherwise we run the risk of arguing that we're not having an argument.

Basically we both agree brake lights are very important and need to be seen from all angles, especially when in red light districts when punters are swerving to avoid prostitutes and growling badgers.

The two YouTube clips put my mind at rest, but daytime angle views would be useful.

C U Next Tuesday FUCOFFee! :)

Steve, have you realised your brake lights are stuck on? :P

Seriously though, they sure as hell look bright from any angle there.

Holy crapamolie! Yep, they work (at night at least!) Excellent, I'll check my tracking number again...ah the exitement is back.

Nice one matey, bitchfest over, although a very enjoyable one as such fests go. My points were dubious at best and purely trying to post rationalize what could have been a crappy purchase. As per these vids, evidently not.

They do look great though dont they! :P

dudes ... If your that worried, just wire you fecking fogs to your brake lights ... And while you at it, hang a cow from your tail gate and wire up a cattle prod so when you brake the fecker shits itself all over the road so the car behind you is well and truely in the <beep>

Job. Done.

Nup. I've got a 'loon mate and they just don't look that good IMO. Instead, I bought the Hella smoked jobbies using the orignal bulb housings, awesome quality but obviously not LEDs.

Opinions please, I am deciding which ones to fit on my Daytona grey RS6+ Avant. I have black optics, black wheels and black Audi symbols - do you think the black lights would work, or would I be better off with the lightly smoked ones?

Here are the black lights:

Hella are the ONLY replacements to use as they meet all OEM requirements.
