To buy a car that has had suspension changed, intercoolers swapped for Wagners and a recent Cambelt sorted is going to be very rare (you may get some of thiose things... just not all). The gearbox can't be 'sorted', only swapped out for a new one. If someone posts that they've performed regular GB services then it's interesting but don't go looking for it or you could be waiting a loooong time waiting for one. If you can find a car with a warranty, take it, there can be very few worse things to buy. if you can't find one with warranty, pick a forum car and get the warranty in place (may take an inspection and month of waiting). Then, take new car (with warranty) to MRC for a full health check, then MRC take health check results and car to Camberley Audi and insist they fix everything wrong with car (Rob at CamAudi will no doubt find other stuff wrong and fix that too). Pick the car up and start enjoy a well sorted '6.hanman wrote:My plan is to buy an RS6 (and pay extra, if needed) that has had the following sorted:
Gearbox
Suspension
Inter coolers
Cam-belt
Try to just look at forum cars and delve deep into the car's history via said forum. It'll be better than any paper trail you get with the car and it'll be a ten-fold more entertaining read too.
Good luck and remember rule 1. Pictures or it didn't happen.
No matter where you go, there you are.

thanks for all the info guys. evrything stated here is what i expected, i'm just glad i have that comfort now that i am not jumping in over my head if i do my homework properly..
My 2p. I have a C5 RS6 (since February) and an E46 M3 CSL (for many years).
In my view you won't end up in a ditch if you buy an M5. BMWs, like Audis, have excellent stability control systems. I speak from several experiences of poor driving (mine) rescued by excellent engineering (BMW's).
Yes RS6s are quite costly to run. I bought a decent forum car, maintained by Camberley Audi (still is), and have still stumped up for intercoolers and a gearbox oil leak. But overall I think they are astonishingly reliable for something with this much performance.
I would add thermostat to the list of common faults. Lots of people (including me) have had them go. Annoying cheap part, tons of labour situation (basically a cambelt change). Feel happy if it more-or-less coincides with a cambelt change being needed anyway...
Here's my main point: I also run boring cars, including an allroad. Unsurprisingly when the allroad needs tyres or a cambelt change or new discs, the costs aren't very different from those for the RS6. The difference is that I never mind paying the money when the 6 needs something, because I love the car. Such a pleasure to own, such a great bit of engineering.
Cheers, Richard.

I was in exactly the same position as you,I wanted an RS6 2 or 3 years ago but was put off by the maintenance costs if something goes wrong.I bided my time and had a few other cars inbetween then found an RS6 that had all the major issues sorted including wagner i/c,coilovers and regular gearbox services along with recent alternator change and also came with a transferrable warranty (warranty direct) which is a monthly contract and i can cancel at anytime, and covers all parts up to the value of the car. This made my mind up and i had to have it,2 months in i havent had a single problem and it is the best car i have ever had.
Find a good one and go for it

Correct I love my 6 and she is warrentied but the smiles make up for eveything elseRoss22 wrote:Hi Hanman,
I agree with Posterboy - Buy one! they are truly amazing cars. I have had mine 14months now and still love it as much as the day i picked it up.
If you can find one that has an Audi Warranty you will be fine - (Gold dust in my view). There are other warranties around that seem ok but do a search - Its a regular topic of conversation amongst this forum
Good luck and be brave
Ross
