Most power made from standard turbo??

Post by Ryan_s3 » Tue Jan 27, 2004 4:12 pm

Was interested to know what the most power anyone has got out of a s3 with a standard turbo? What modifications were involved? What is he limit of the stock internals ?What is the cc of the standard injectors and what is there limit?regards Ryan.
A friend of mine is developing a garratt gt option for s3's who produces them now?

I just read that the s3 runs 0.9-1 bar standard but is on average raised to 1.3-1.5 bar and occasionally spikes to 1.8 bar!!!
This must make the s3 engine incredibly strong.Does anyone know if the s3 pistons are forged? It would be interesting to know the size of injectors are ?

forged pistons, stronger crank and rods. The cylinder walls are also strengthen, apparently cylinder 3 more so then the others?

380cc injectors i believe

hope that helps

Wow!!Strong engine, forged pistons just like a evo!But 380cc injectors are tiny, there going to max(100% duty cycle) at about 280bhp anyway unless u use a fpr.I assume tuners recommend new injectors with a upgraded turbo, whats available??540's?regards Ryan

380cc, yes. But the cars have a 3bar FPR i believe...

They are good for 350hp i believe.

You can use whatever injectors you like, but it depends on your tuning, fuel pump, fuel rail and so on..

I very much doubt that the 380cc can handle 350bhp even with a fpr,i believe that 280-300bhp would be absolute tops.My previous car was a mr2 turbo with 540's and a decent fpr and i was hitting near 100% at 380hp.Would be interested to see if anyone had bettered 280 with standard injectors?regards Ryan

Wak got 290 bhp at the last AMD RR, but he did a few 'mods' to help with this - ecu reset, low pressures on front tyres and weight in the boot.

S8n if you have 275 bhp then that is a bit more than we are achieving in the UK (especially from an APR remap) - generally we see 250 bhp to 270 bhp max (but hey whats 5 bhp amongst friends!)

A lot of these figures depend on the rolling road too. When WAK achieved his 290 bhp on the same day my car put out 233 bhp!!!

Ryan, check out http://www.auto-amd.com/s3.asp - they do a 330 bhp conversion, new turbo, injectors etc.

Actually there is a guy called Simon Elman, whose S3 has recorded 300 bhp at G-Force RR (I believe but someone will put me straight if wrong) - which is a highly respected RR. He has standard internals and turbo/injectors, although his list of mods is like a shopping list - phelonic spacers, reseated DV + lots of boost blah blah

Checking out AMD's website they do quote figures approx 265-270 bhp chip only, and then quote an extra 10 bhp on that with sports cats and cat back exhaust...

Yes g-force is a top rr.I've just read on audiforums that the 225bhp tt has 360cc injectors(even smaller) so i reckon 300bhp is the very limit on stock injectors.I'd like a chat with the chap with 300hp,does he come on here often?regards Ryan

Mine produced 276bhp on the rollers at AMD, MTM chip, cat back and filter, standard everything else.

I think Simon had a bad run on the rollers that day, but has produced power around the 300bhp mark on other occasions. I think this is about the limit on the standard K04 turbo. I bet Simons already got a big turbo conversion lined up

thanks for the replies lads, does anyone know for definite what fuel pressure is standard/max on the s3??I am quite surprised that the standard 360cc injectors can handle 300bhp.i know of cars(4 cylinder) with 430cc's that start leaning out around 300hp.I notice that most of the turbo kits 300+hp require new injectors so 300hp must be the limit on the stock turbo/injectors.I know it's unlikely but does anyone have a compressor map for the k04 turbo?Whats the most power anyone has made on the stock block and internals with add-ons(filter exhaust etc) and a uprated turbo??regards Ryan

most tuners seem to get between 275 and 300hp from the standard injectors, and of course as boost pressure goes up so does fuel pressure.
the big turbo kits replace the standard injectors, and running approx 1.35-1.4 bar get around 330 to 355 hp but not much more torque ( the boost is maintained higher up the revs range so the power is higher at high revs, but the max boost is similar to standard chips therefore so is the max torque) . Obviously the standard forged internals can easily cope with 350hp or more.
Some kits running 420+hp use alternative internals with a stroked 2l conversion.
the k04 turbo runs out of steam at higher revs and cannot maintain the boost - thats why the big turbo kits run the same boost (limited by the relatively high compression ration) but maintain boost pressure much higher up the revs range and therefore produce much more power (which is a function of torque and revs).
i get the impression that with a 100 cell cat, exhaust, standard turbo and chip, you would get between 275 and 300hp, and just above 300 and 320lb of torque.

with a big turbo kit and the standard internals, including big injectors, you can get upto 360hp but still with the 300-320lb of torque.
