Post by TheoryOfDriving » Sat Sep 25, 2010 9:12 pm

Wondering how rare the v8 S4 will be in the future, does anyone know how many where sold in the UK?

No idea but they must be pretty rare as I've only seen one other since I got mine in December.

Seem two RS6s and one RS4, I think.

I live near fairly affluent areas too.

That's what I was thinking, The S4 V8 is obviously very appealing due to it's stealth look

They're not at all rare but it's just hard to pick them out as there are so many S-lines out there.

Silver mirrors!

A regular B6 is easy to spot - just ignore the pointless S-Line badge - it has colour-coded wing mirrors.

It doesn't help that Audi themselves even refer to S models as their 'S-Line':

Do a search for 's line' in Google and the first result is 'The Audi S-Line' (http://microsites.audi.co.uk/microsites/SLine/), referring to S3, S4, etc.

I really don't know why they chose to give an optional upgrade pack a similar name and badge.

Probably the same reason they only got 350 BHP from a 4.2 V8; to keep the RS4 desirable.

They might look silver, the B6 mirrors are aluminium but for the B7 it got chrome plated plastic covers. Another cheap skate cost reduction..

The B7 S4 is the only one with quad exhausts pipes so quite easy to tell a standard B7 S4 from a standard B7 A4 from the rear even if de-badged. The B6 is harder to distinguish as only visible external differences are badges, aluminium mirror covers, grey grill and standard wheels.

Aren't the exhausts slightly different (size/shape)?

I'm pretty sure mine are just silver plastic on my B6.

My mate's B5 RS4 has genuine aluminium ones though.

Mine are plastic too - I much prefer them to the shiny chrome-look ones.

After saying I never see RS/S models I saw a nice black B7 RS4 Avant this morning.

Plus the plastic ones are a) less likely to get nicked, and b) cheaper to replace when some scally does either steal them or kick them off!

Silly question but how easy are the aluminium B6 S4 ones to take off? I need to remove them to wrap them. Are they removeable or is it part of the actual frame of the mirror?

Depends if you want to put them back on, I had to change the cover on an old A4 after playing wing mirror tag with a VW Golf on a narrow lane, I won ripped hers clean out of the door :)

Once the glass is removed by gently levering out they are quite easy to take apart.

The B6 S4 I had defintely had solid metal mirror covers, 54 reg vehicle, the 05 reg B7 S4 has aluminium plated plastic ones. Just have to touch them to know the difference but they do look the same.
