introduction and problem presented

Post by ddidds » Tue Jul 27, 2010 12:04 am

hello

this is actually my second post here

my name is Alecs, I'm from Bucharest , Romania and i have bought a rs4 b5 a couple of months ago with 139 000km. the car was produced in September 2000 and registered for the first time in march 2001 in Italy, it has a skn stage 1 chip and a very noisy supersprint silencer (which is going to be changed for the stock one) billstein lowered shocks(also to be changed in the future for the stock ones). it should have somewhere around 447 hp and 560 nm torque. it is a beast ! :)

i fell in love with this model when i was 20 years old and saw it for the first time in Austria. since then i always wanted one and luckily one of the 2 rs4 b5's in Romania was for sale and of course i bought it. i also met the other rs4 b5 owner a few weeks ago and we both share the same sympathy for this beautiful car.

the car is in a very good condition and has been very well taken care of by it 2 previous owners, but it is still a 10 year old car so i have changed some parts (turbos, they were leaking, brakediscs and some other small parts etc) but i still have a problem with the car. i suppose it is an air intake problem because in high gears like the 4'th if i step all the way down on the gas pedal from 2000rpm at 3500 there is a strange, swirl-like noise which disappears at 3700rpm.

i have tried several famous services here but they all look at the car as if it was alien, no one knows what the problem might be.

if anyone had this problem before, i would be grateful if you could share the solution with me

at the same time i am in the search of a good rs4 b5 service in Hungary/Austria/Germany

i have absolutely no mechanical knowledge about cars therefore i need a honest, cheap:) and professional mechanic to see this car in the nearby of Romania

happy to be here

Alecs

Hi, welcome, it may be a pressure leak.

Yes would get a pressure test done to see if there are any boost leaks. Boost leaks are common on our cars...

Is it like a dentist's drill?

Hard to make out from the vid.

Does it make the same noise when in neutral, or only in gear when driving around?

Does it happen in each gear?

hi thanks for the reply stumpy67

it resembles to a dentist drill if i think about it
in neutral, 1'st and 2'nd gear absolutely no sound.
from 3'rd onwards and only if i step on the gaspedal from low rpm's like 2000. i was told that by doing so " i create pressure ", therefore the sound.
for example if i change 2'nd at 6500 to 3rd there is no sound

yesterday i went to the 6'th service in Bucharest and still the sound ! nobody is able to solve this over here!
they said they checked the "boost" and any air pressure leaks and that it was ok
the turbos are newly installed, changed both 4k km ago as one was bleeding oil. since the installation i have had this sound

I'm thinking of driving to Germany to solve this problem. i would go to mrc but UK is twice as far, simpler put, i am willing to go through fire to solve this, so any help that might cancel my dedicated trip to Germany is very appreciated.

its either a boost leak or a duff turbo, you need to get yourself a simple boost leak tester from ebay and you can solve the problem yourself, you will need some mechanical knowledge owning one of these cars when you have no specialists nearby or you will have a very sad ownership.

i took the skn chip off and guess what...no more noise.
they guys at skn did a little research and they found out that the blow off valves on the stock rs4 can't handle 1.2 bar in the turbos(skn pressure) as they are designed for only 1 bar.
tomorrow i will have the new blow off valves installed and will post the result here

cheers
