CamBelt Change Query

Post by raza_1 » Fri Jan 23, 2004 7:48 pm

Hi all,

I know there is a discussion already posted on the cambelt change but I have a question.

Audi have told me that the following parts get changed in the cambelt change: CamBelt, RelayRoller(Tensioner) and Roller.

Audi Specialists behind Fontain Motors are telling me that the following parts will be changed if I get the work carried out from them: CamBelt, RelayRoller(Tensioner, Roller and Damper. ??

I checked with Audi and they do not replace the Damper unless it is faulty and I argued this with the Audi Specilaist and the only option they gave me was that they would carry the work out on my instructions and leave the damper but then they would not warranty the work if there were problems afterwards.

Any advice on what route to take as Audi are charging way too much for the cambelt change and 80,000 service which totals £913.77

Cheers Raz

If I were you I would change it. The front has to come off again to do it later. My engine was destroyed a few weeks after the cambelt was changed. Fortunately it was covered by warranty due to a failiure of the waterpump bearing.
Had a short block and heads, close to £9000 bill.

Blimey £9000 pounds.. that is scary.. so i should go ahead and change the damper as well.. but I have heard that it is advisable to also change the water pump at the same time.. that could be costly.. all these things together even though there might not be a problem with the water pump or damper

With 80K under its belt why take the risk for the sake of a few hundred? Go to a specialist but use genuine parts.Only modified parts will be supplied ie latest waterpump etc.

I would change the thermostat and the water pump also. If the waterpump fails it might kill your engine totally. And while they are at it why not change the coolant sensor also.

Morpheus has said all you need to know. Yes it might be expensive, but this is a critical part of the engine so why take a chance?

I'll be having ALL the bits changed (including water pump and sensors - surely the S4 uses ECU control instead of a thermostat???), and probably at 60K instead of 80K because my engine is a bit more stressed than normal...

IIRC, the thermostat controls the radiator circulation and is in a very tight place behind the radiator in the passenger side upper block. I will get it changed, its not that expensive.
