I was hinting at the pad "pins" issue! Pehaps I was too subtle
Not heard of this one but let me guess, pads wear down to a point that when still legal, a part of the pad which is a pin gouges the disc?

Good guess ! Early pads had some steel pins in them that gouged 3 grooves in the disc long before the pads had worn out (I think it just about coincided with the wear sensor light coming on) revised pads don't have this problem.

When were the modified pads introduced?

I ask because mine's a fairly early RS4 Avant (July 2006), so I may have had the original version...

I've just had new front disks and pads at 45K. Don't know if the pads were changed before I got the car, but even if they were that's over 35K on them which is pretty good I'd have thought. No warning light (and no scoring!) but could feel the brakes weren't quite right.

From memory around mid 2008, my 56 plate had the original pad which started scoring the disks with 40% (Audi's own assessment) remaining!!

Strange, so my (should be) 06 plate had the original pads but I didn't suffer any disc scoring?

My pads ate the discs at 26k! Well ate may be a bit harsh but scored to the point they looked horrible,no low pad warning lights on either which was the whole point of my gripe to audi, the warning system actually ruins the discs before theyve even warned you!
