on a side note:
I think thicker oil, perhaps 10W60, and a LOWER oil temp 180F/82C would really diminish the deposits...
driving 'style' or service duty imo have little to do with it...

is it me, or do oil temps run higher in the UK
I see the avg being 100C or so (is that correct?)
mine runs (as most other US cars) at 92C or so...
I'm wondering does that account for the apparent (if you believe the net) differences between the amount of deposits US vs UK

what is an avg UK oil temp, normal highway cruising, normal ambient temp (sa 10 to 25C) ?

maybe it's run higher for emissions or something?

As has been widely reported you guys in the US use 10W40 (?) whereas here it is 5W30, perhaps why there is differing engine temp?.

On motorways it ranges anywhere between 94 and 97 on a decent run but on warm up will always get to 100 before setlling down. A mild thrashing will see up to 105 for me, 110+ is a rarity except on the Nurnburgring or on a very hot 30+ degrees C day.

that makes sense, oil wt.

so avg ~ 95-96, not much higher than the US

105C/220 is rare, flogging mine 215 range, peaks at 220 and settles back

never had the opportunity to Ring test it...lucky dog :D

Scag, I know you have loyalty to Art and have to defend him regardless. But you really ought to try and read & understand all that is going on before posting such stuff. BTW Google and in less than 10 minutes you will get all the data you want. :)

Having used that hyperlink Sims it leads me to a thread asking people what task they are doing now within which Arthur has posted. The point being?

And what loyalty does scaghead have to Arthur? Having met the Essex boy I can't see what he would have to gain from it; it's not like they are life long mates. He writes it as he sees it as most of us would. And I'm not defending Scaghead because if I thought he was wrong I would tell him so just in case that thought had crossed your mind.

BTW, you still haven't contributed to the RS4 servicing dealership thread or the DRC sticky. As said all regular forum members who contribute genuinely help new owners with this information so I would hope you want to add to that? Sicne you have not listed yourself on the DRC sticky is your car not affected thus far?

Sims - I'd also like to know what dealer you use and/or recommend, and what the status of your DRC is?

You've posted a lot about DRC issues and carbon issues - but we know next to nothing about your RS4.

so he's the one with the problem?

and you're doing the stalking...
funny how you turn everything around on to the other guy, and not a once assume ownership of your crap...
not to mention insult him as a 'lackey'

why does he have to 'defend me regardless', lol
he and I have had our differences, but like men, we resolved them
you on the other hand...just keep insulting people from your 'perfect' perch on high...

I ran silkolene pro s 5w40 for a while and noticed higher running temps almost straight away - roughly 4-5 degrees.

Is it 5W40 in the US or 10W40? I can't remember. Maybe is 10W40 that is why with 5W40 Rob yours ran higher? I'm not tribologist so have no real idea how the ratings affect running temps but just a thought.

5W40

for a given temp the higher the rating the higher the viscosity
I don't think you would see much temp difference between 5/30 and 5/40
in fact I've observed the opposite...as oil gets worn out, ie, viscosity drops, the oil temp gets higher...
I'm sure fuel dilution, contamination, etc. are at play also

but at 90C the 40 would be ~25% thicker, meaning for a given driving pressure thru a fixed orifice/gap 25% less oil would flow...
as thru the valve guides
