Front Speakers Not Working
The front speakers in my 99V S4 are not working. The music system is the Audi Concert One. I've tried the obvious of adjusting the FAD control:- if I adjust it to max on the forward speakers, there is basically no sound whatsoever. Thus, I conclude they are not working.
I bought the car just before Xmas and it has a hands free phone kit fitted. I don't know for which phone, but not for my phone. Does this interfere with the front speakers at all - i.e. turn them off when you answer the phone and just leave the rear ones active? Maybe it's gone into call answer mode by mistake, or maybe some wires have just come loose.
Any ideas of what's gone wrong would be much appreciated. The warranty company doesn't cover music systems. Boo!

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
Firstly, all speakers should mute when in phone mode. Also, the DIS should show 'Telephon', or something similar, instead of displaying the radio station/CD track when in phone mode. Is your car Bose-equipped? If it is Bose, then there's a separate amplifier somewhere. If it's non-Bose, then the front speakers should be driven staright from the amplifier built in to the HU.

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
No, my car is not Bose equipped.
As you say all speakers should mute. Back ones are fine 100%, front ones are just not working - all 4, the larger bottom ones and the smaller top ones. So the speakers are driven straight from the amplifier in the HU, according to what you say, peterb. I guess it is unlikely that all four blow up at the same time. So I guess this sounds like loose wires coming out of the amplifier? Is it easy to remove check?

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
I don't believe that the dash speakers and front door speakers are separately amped. However, it is possible that there is a remote amplifier for the rear speakers. If it is just a cable come unplugged, then it is probably at the back of the HU. Withdraw the HU and check the connectors going into the back of it.

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
Thanks peterb. I shall try to remove the HU. Err, what is the HU? Is that the main control panel so to speak? Any tips on removing it. Does gentle leverage with a screwdriver work or are there generally some connecting screws. I appreciate your RS6 may not be fitted with my somewhat older music system.

Head Unit (I assume) - the box in the dash with the controls on it. You need special tools (not actually very special) to remove it - a security measure to prevent tea-leafs taking it.
BTW, I assume that the rest of the system (the HU and the rear speakers) are working???

I'm not 100% sure about the Audi HU's, but certainly the industry standard is two metal rods per side of the unit. This is a specific tool that you need to get from Halfords or wherever, or you can be a nice little piky like me and use four WD40 straws Spot on. Probably best to get the tools though, as it makes it a little easier to handle!
Good luck with it

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
Audi HUs use a different type of extractor - two flat blades with hooks in the end. I have, in the past, managed to remove a HU using a couple of nail files, but I now have the correct tools. Are you likely to make it to the Windsor meet? I could bring the extractors along to the meeting.

Re: Front Speakers Not Working
Next Wednesday looks free at the moment. Wouldn't mind going to a meet as well. Until when are you usually there? I'd be setting off about 5:45 - 6:00 from the bottom of the M11. So up the M11, round the clogged M25, down the M4.

Usually at the Crispin until at least 10pm. Right, I'll look out the tools. There are two or three others who head round the M25 from that direction from Braintree and Colchester etc, and often meet en-route to travel in convoy. A visit to www.tyresmoke.net should allow you to make contact.
