Navigation in Europe
Navigation in Europe
I want to update my navigation dvd to 2010 before i head on a trip around Switzerland, Italy and France in a few weeks.
Does the 2 disc set that Audi sell cover ALL roads in Europe, or just MAJOR roads, like my old RNS-D did ?
Thanks in advance.

Copies are harder for the DVD drive to read, so the laser runs hotter and will burn out sooner - IMHO copies are a false economy. Two members on www.audiforum.us sell quite a few replacement DVD drives to RNS-E owners...

False economy when you can get OEM 2010 discs for £20-40 more; just search around. I did and got some for £90. And therefore no potential damage to the RNS-E laser / reader. The other issue is of the RNS-E does run at higher temps then the disc ejector mechanism may fail.
I ran a copied RNS-E disc in my old S4 and had to have the tray and ejector motor replaced because of excessive heat. A one off maybe but a lot more expensive to replace RNS-E parts than buying OEM discs.

The independent specialist I took it to replace the reader and tray had advised it was a common fault when using copied navigation DVD disks. I have no reason to doubt him and he has no afiliation to Audi.
He was in the same game as craighyb.
mp3 disks. I'm not sure what you mean? The single slot DVD drive in the RNS-E reads DVD disks and there are mp3 SD cards slots? I gather there is also a lot less information on a standard ripped / copied CD than there is on the nav-DVD?

And the unit also plays cd's and mp3 cd's. A disc be it cd or DVD has the data written in strings. If this data is corrupt or unreadable to the processor will display an error. I fail to see how an operational disc which is a Direct copy of an original would be sub standard quality. I'll take my chances

Definityely NOT a one off.P_G wrote:A one off maybe
I'm a moderator on a website that specialises in retrofitting Audi OE sat navs - and there have been 100+ cases where a copied DVD can't be read so the owner has bought a genuine DVD and soon enough that can't be read either so they end up replacing the DVD drive.
I can't remember one case where a DVD drive has failed when OE discs have been used.
So it's not a one off, and using copied DVDs WILL shorten the life of your DVD drive.
