What intake modifications are available?

Post by cosworth27T » Mon Feb 03, 2003 7:30 pm

I've seen allot of banter over at the Audiworld forums about intake modifications. I curious as to what modifications, if any, are chaps making to our powerplant?

Does the 460HP RS4 upgrade kits use the stock RS4 airbox?

Cheers

Yep

I currently have the OE intake with standard air filter

A few of the guys have the K&N filter

I think I was once told by the tuner that the air filter could potentially handle 600/700 bhp, as long as it didnt get too dirty it has a large enough surface area to cope

I believe the only way to have an increased effect by modifying the inlet side is to gas flow the inlet manifolds

Apart from that I believe Andiroo was considering some other options on where to draw the air from in an attempt to reduce under bonnet temperature and reduce the charge temperature, I am sure once he has read this he will post his comments

hope this helps

Indeed. Firstly the air intake mods are quite limited, K&N filter change seems to be the most popular, but the results are questionable over OEM. I've gone for a BMC Carbon Dynamics airbox which is being fitted over the next few weeks. It is replacement like for like, so unfortunately still utilises the poor ramair flap in the radiator housing . Looking at the possibility of rerouting this intake either to below the bumper or behind the front number plate for a bigger surface area. Supposedly air flow gains of 2 to 4% can be achieved, but you do need to shield the MAF from direct air contact, and this isn't part of the kit . As soon as its done I will post the results

The intake manifold is the other bit we're looking at - Three choices really, MTM, modified RS4 or modified S4. Until we get some flow maps sorted I would have to say MTM is probably my favourite option so far.

If anyone has any other ideas it would be appreciated

rip that little flapper out of the front of the airbox where your lower velocity stack resides. if you can route a hose to that, it would be great. otherwise, i rotated that velocity stack 180 degrees...you'll see why when you look at it. I'm sure it don't make a huge difference though. heck, if you're going to run a hose, you can also enlarge that current hole and place a larger velocity stack there, but it's not as convenient

after that, you can run an ITG foam filter towards the top of the airbox by attaching a 3" hose to it. on s4's, we've been using jc60/73, but you guys might want one that's a little larger in diameter (for the utlet pipe). spool up really improved on an S4+k04 kit. I think he even maxed out the mass-air sensor at 364.08 g/s. what sort of MAF values do you guys see when chipped?!

On my s3 i removed the original airbox and used a JR induction kit. it definatley makes a difference. but only small. I also removed the 3 MAF screens that sit before and after the MAF. 2 plastic and one metal. (not sure if the RS4 has these)

I saw a RAM air type kit for the M3 which really impressed me, heres a pic

Maybe they do an RS4 version?

Thanks guys I will look into these options and let you know what I come up with

fwiw, s-cars with a single, metal debris screen on the maf don't see as much gain from its removal as a maf sensor with a metal debris screen+plastic flow straightener. On my 2001 MAF for the S4, I only saw 2-3 g/s gain across the board. Besides, I like the extra security of that debris screen just in case something wants to find its way to a turbo You're going to gain alot by getting a filter with a lower pressure drop and larger surface area.

Thanks Dean, now something like this would be cool for me Image Image

and Piggie, couldn't agree with you more re the flow straightener - ECU just can't maximise high fuelling without it Image

If you guys wanted to get someone to make an intake system these people might be worth talking to
