BIG brakes
Re: BIG brakes
David
There are people who think X-Drilled (cast or otherwise) are the dogs b*ll*cks which is fine....
If you want longevity and performance from your rotors on a heavy car you should have grooved rotors....IMHO of course
Just check out what most heavy front engined endurance racers use.....

Re: BIG brakes
From the AP Racing web site....
Disc Choice
AP Racing Formula Brake Kits come supplied with large diameter discs. The ventilated discs have either 24, 30 or 48 cooling vanes depending on the application, to draw air through the centre of the discs. They are handed left and right, and are cross drilled or grooved, again, depending on the application, to allow gasses that build up on the surface to escape. Where cross drilling is used it is more restrained than on the face of our full race discs, as pad longevity is more important on a road car than weight saving. The discs are wider and of a larger diameter than standard. The extra material controls heat build up and the larger diameter means that the caliper can be mounted further away from the centre increasing the leverage effect, which increases braking torque while decreasing effort required on the pedal.
Grooved Discs : G4, G8, Grooves improve 'cleaning' of the pad surfaces and result in a more consistent brake performance. Grooved discs have a longer life than cross-drilled discs.
Radius Drilled Discs : RD, Radius Cross-Drilled discs offer improved 'bite' and 'feel', but are less resistant to cracking than grooved or plain discs.
AP Racing Formula Brake Kits use a Bolted disc mounting. Tightening torque for disc to bell mounting is also given here.
N.B. For Track Days, Grooved discs are recommended.

Re: BIG brakes
I agree with the AP info Jeff but unless I am mistaken, they are talking about cross drilled discs, not discs manufactured with cast in holes, that's my point.
Re: BIG brakes
No they are talking about cast holes ...
Cast holes are better than drilled holes but they still suffer from the same issues...Exploding Discs for one

Re: BIG brakes
groved ones it is then!! i'd still stick to the monster 4 road callipers though.. saveing all the time!!

Paul
I'm OK doing the initial work and I'll even get a price for the S3 but I just don't want to start organising money etc...
SFourMan
I'll get a price for the various kits and you can choose...

what kit have you got?
Re: BIG brakes
355 x 32 with Monster 4 pots running Pagid Blues at the moment....I would have had the 6 Pots but they didn't have any at the time..I might be 'upgrading' to the Mega Monster (Ohhh errr misses) 6 Pot which is hugh......
Re: BIG brakes
i'll buy your monster 4's off you for a super discounted price if your after 6 pots.. come on you know you want to!!
Re: BIG brakes
Jeff, how do you find the pagid blues? I had these on my original S3 calipers/discs but i found they squeeked like a pig??
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.
Re: BIG brakes
The Blues are an excellent pad...There is a very slight delay as they come up to temp when you first use them. They are slightly more track orintated than the Ferodos which I would normally run. The squeaking sounds like a problem with your standard set-up and the Pagid.
I would recomeended Ferodo DS2500 or 4003 for everyday use plus some trackdays. The Pagid blues are almost twice the price but they do have the edge on performance on track.
Not sure that I'm in a position to Upgrade just yet so you'll probable need to buy your own calipiers .....

Re: BIG brakes
Can we put the stock fronts onto the back if we go for one of the large hispec kits?
It's just the rear brakes look pretty small, and since if I put some big 6 pot hispec on the front the balance would hopefully still be kept???
Any views??

Re: BIG brakes
The rears to next to no work in most cars (Porsches being the exception)....you can upgrade the rears as well using HiSpecs new rear caliper with mechanical handbrake but I think it will mainly be for the looks rather than any real braking advantage.
Re: BIG brakes
Kinda thought that was the case but I heard that the skyline boys have done this in the past, and I thought rather than just put them in a corner in the garage somewhere I would stick them on the back if it was going to be of anygood (even if just to make it look a little better), being that is it would be FOC + labour ...
