RS5 at Goodwood Festival of speed.

They have a white RS5 on display, 1st one I have seen in the "flesh".

I am sure will it drive very well etc, but looks are rather understated, as is the cabin.

IMO, the RS4 aesthetics & interior have rather more aplomb/occassion.

Hmmm. Don't agree with you there! I was surpised at how good it looked myself - the curves seemed more pronounced than they appear in print, and with the fat (or should that be phat!) wheels made it look pretty mean.
Cabin is quite understated I guess, as are all Audi's, including the R8. All in all, though, I thought it looked great. Whether it's worth 70K (with "must have" options), though, is another matter.

Just thought it looked like another A5. Was pretty unimpressed.

I agree with Drcarrera, although you'd need deep pockets to spend £70k on an RS5, the depreciation would be frightening. However, I do think a well specced car would be £65k and for that money you have a lot of choice, new and used. At that price I just wouldn't be tempted.

As with a lot of these cars, it'll probably make more sense as a second hand buy.

The RS4 was tempting as a new car for the price was just about right, and it was/is an emotive package.

The RS5, IMO, does not shout "I want it, I want it" loudly enough, but I would consider it when it's 18 months old.

In any event, numbers in the UK will be far less than the RS4.

Wasn't aware of that, is it a more limited production run? If I did go for one I would be looking to pay no more than £45k.

Very true. I think there's a lot of competition in the fast coupé class around that price bracket as well.

Re your point on depreciation, have RS4 second hand values not held up well? Most that I see have between 50-60% of original value after 3 years. Will RS5 be very different?

And I agree there is a lot of competition at that price but I don't want a BMW, GTR or a Porsche for various reasons and there aren't too many others that will offer that GT practicality + performance. The way I prefer to think about it (rightly or wrongly!) is that it's a cheaper Maser GT, BMW 6 series or even conti GT and is a bit more of a Q car anyway. Used R8, again too flash for me.

GTBoy, there are loads of alternatives. I'm not knocking your choice because I haven't seen one in the flesh yet, but at a premium over a similar spec C63 or M3 it might be difficult to justify. Just for fun though, you could easily get into a late M5, an RS6, M6, XFR, XKR, the list goes on..........

Oh no I know you're not, I didn't mean to sound defensive. I wholeheartedly agree it's too expensive really, mine will is £67k, esp compared to the M3 or the Merc, but I still think it's the right choice for me (I like a quattro).

So the extra bit is worth it for me personally, hmm I think. I'm just glad I'm not Dutch, where a similar spec would be €130k...ouch.

My dealer told me today that they have stopped taking orders for now as they don't know how many they will get in 2010.

GTBoy, you've got 67,000 reasons to be defensive! I still can't find an options list, so I've no idea how extravagent your spec is, but I respect your choice. If all the talk about production numbers is correct, it will surely protect residuals, which would go a long way in justifying any decision I might make.
