Monitor you start up rattle if you have it. See if with the manifold tightened down it's improved
For me it did not change anything to the startup rattle. It was doing before and it is still doing afterwards.
Can you explain why it would change ?
As far as I remember the rattle is a due to the fact that oil does not stay into the tensioners very long when the engine is down. So they need 1-2 sec to get filled again at start up in order tighten appropriately the chain

No other reason than mine seems to have got abit better. I wondered if it was just a coincidence or something that was done during fitting the manifold

No start up rattle at all this morning. I'm starting to think manifold gaskets that aren't properly sealed cause the residual oil pressure to leak over night. Now it's sealed it's holding a small amount of pressure that's keeping the tensioner in place.

The fact the first start up after fitting the manifold sounded like the tappets had drained kind of backs up my theory. Manifold off dumped all the pressure, leaking gaskets dump a little maybe?

Mine still makes the same start up rattle but to honest the 4 loose bolts weren't that loose to warrant a leak in the gasket.

I was hoping that by keeping my car on an uphill slope of the drive the rattle would be less due to most of the oil being at the rear of the engine near the chain. I didn't realize the tensioner filled up with oil. So no matter which way I park it will make no difference.

I know it is a big job but is there anything we can do about it? I really hate the rattle in mine. I would assume changing the oil every month might cure it but £80 a month would be too much.

Has anyone tried the Castrol Edge 5w40 yet and done a few miles on it?

I'm trying 5w40 next oil change to see how it goes. Only other solution is a new tensioner. Apparently the update version has a one way valve to stop the rattle. But if your doing that it's an engine out job and may aswell replace the chains and that aswel so a mega bucks job.

I did hear somebody used engine flush, which cured it, but that was a one off instance so not really confirmed.

Really disappointing noise though isn't it, especially when passers by wince at the racket it makes

I have to admit that I gave up.
I hate that rattle but except using a thick oil (or paying big bucks for some modified tensioner) I don't think that I will get rid of it.

Xyber I really hope that you will continue not to have it.

The best solution, other than going to the expense of replacing the tensioner, is to use 5w 40 or even Mobil 1 15w 40. Another possibility is to turn the engine a few times before it fires up. Kind of like primining the oil system.

The noise can be embarrasing but bystanders are generally left with the lasting impression of the noise when the V8 fires up.

Quick update on the rattle, after a few weeks monitoring it each morning and night, the warmer the weather, the quieter the rattle it seems. When parked in direct sun all day, little or no rattle, parked in shade all day its worse, but dependant on the ambient temps. Crap raining weather, rattle ahoy!!! So next oil change will be with Edge 5w40 and see what happens.

MRC on Monday for mapping, cant wait!

I'm interested to try the 5w40 too. It's a fairly new product, yeah?

Once mapped it'll be (more of) a beast!

Are you running a Miltek with sports cats or no cats at all like me?

Yeah I was going to see if he could email me the dyno to post up as they are clearer than a scan. I did have a mate with an HD camera coming aswell, but he backed out last night, possibly something to do with the big thumb print on his forehead!

Off in a while to check fluids, tyres and a quick run through on Vagcom. Tank is brimmed with Vpower, energy drinks in the fridge, ready for my 4am start, Snooper updated and MRC programmed into the nav

Is mRC in the units behind Spirac by the way, just looking on streetview now

its quite easy to find, not sure about Spirac or whatever that is, but if you enter the estate, find the burger van (dont eat from it) then turn right and follow the road...

look forward to seeing the dyno, good luck mate
