Your favourite fuel, power wise

What fuel do you feel makes your B6/B7 S4 perform at it's best and feel it's quickest.

Not best economy or convienience etc, but the one that puts a smile on your face, even if you only use it once in a blue moon

I've been looking at this for a while and was wondering if what I'd found would show in the results of this poll.

Ive found T99 to feel the better performing, but quickly goes off/stale, and V-power to be very close performance wise, but more consistent.

BP Ult felt sluggish and got less mpg

Think ill stick with Vpower, ive heard that T99 is full of octane booster and my local Tesco's has a history of water contaminated fuel

I've never noticed this thread. I have never used bp102, and only used tesco twice and stopped after the fuel problem they had.
Car seems to run better on v-power (even the wife says so too) than bp ultimate but returns a lower mpg, that could be due to enjoying the extra umph it gives???

The problem is (so I've heard) that the car takes a few tanks to fully adapt up to a higher octane fuel, but as soon as you put a tank of lower octane in, it'll adapt down straight away. Something to do with the knock sensor & ECU...

I've only used V-Power in mine since I got it 8 months ago, and have noticed decent mpg when I drive sensibly/out of town.

Haven't tried Tesco 99 yet, as I'm just paranoid about the contamination, and how stale it'll be - how many people who buy Tesco fuel are buying the T99, probably not that many. Having said that, the station I often buy V-Power from is probably a quiet one too, so not sure it'll make much difference.

I also read somewhere about the fuel that supermarkets buy is bought from different markets, wherever is cheapest, so you never really know where the fuel originated. Whereas with Shell & the other big brands, you've got an idea of the origin of the fuel. Whether this makes any difference I have no idea, maybe I'm just being overly paranoid!!

Having just had a bit of a read, I'm not more confused - some folks say that it's true about buying from different markets:

I do know that the supermarkets buy fuel on the spot market, picking up whatever is available and meets BS whatever for automotive fuel. SOme of this has been kicking about for a bit: I've heard this cited as a possible reason for supermarket fuel being possibly of poor quality.

But then some dispute that:

for the standard fuels, not optimax etc, it's exactly the same fuel, from exactly the same refineries at the supermarkets as it is everywhere else. I have a mate who works at the refinery outside Grimsby they sell to about 5 different 'brands' and it's all identical.

The 'super branded' stuff is different, slightly.

I've run my B6 S4 on BP Ultimate (which I think is 97 RON not 98 as you've put in your poll) since I got it in April but I put a tank of V-Power in last weekend to see if there's any difference. I haven't done a full tank yet and, as mentioned above, it might take more than a tank to see any results but there's been no noticeable difference so far. Engine is smooth, MPG is good (for a V8) and performance is excellent. Same as it was on BP Ultimate.

I've since read that for regular grades of fuel (i.e. not T99/V-Power/Ultimate etc), the fuel itself is generally all the same, to the extent that the tanker drivers take the fuel for Shell/Esso/Tesco/ASDA or whoever all from the same tank, but they insert a card into the dispensing system which corresponds to the company that's going to receive the fuel, Tesco for example, and that card determines what package of additives gets added to the fuel.

A good analogy that I read was to baked beans. Imagine that the baked beans themselves in Heinz and Tesco are exactly the same, but the sauce they put them in is slightly different.

Not sure whether a similar system applies to premium grades though, given that some are 97RON and some are 99RON

I did by accident try some Tesco Momentum T99 and didn't notice any difference compared to ESSO Super Unleaded. Was bought from an ESSO branded station that had a Tesco Express Store, though i was buying ESSO fuel, not Tesco.

After the silicon problems with supermarket fuel (i.e. Green Energy) I wouldn't knowingly put the stuff in my car, hate to think how much to repair the cats and oxygen sensors would be..
