Depending on the power you are looking to get out of it, you would be as well getting hold of a more readily available (and cheaper) S4 engine and just fitting K04 (RS4) turbos.
The S4 engine is good for 500ft-lb of torque before you need to think about upgrading internals.

A tuned 1.8T would be better surely?
B5 S4 Saloon Widebody Track Car.
B5 RS4 - now sold.

Not sure how the 1.8 would surely be better.
Just taken out a z22se lump with a bespoke turbo, and getting up to the 300bhp was alot of work.
I understand that buying a S4 engine and just fitting K04 turbos is cheaper and you might be nearly up to the same power but cosworth did alot more than just changing the turbo's.

Indeed Cosworth did do a lot of work (K04 turbos, intercoolers, Y-pipe, inlet manifold, block, heads, rods, cams, downpipes, pipework, etc). RS4 engines give better top end power, S4 engines have greater low down torque.
Fact is, you can pick up an S4 engine for a grand, and there's no shortage of them. Whack on some bigger turbos, intercoolers and injectors (i'm assuming on a kit car you will already have a suitable fuel pump and exhaust setup)and you've got an engine that will match a remapped RS4 engine.
RS4 engine's don't come up very often, and when they do they tend to cost upwards of £3k. Choice is yours, but I think you should do a little more research before discounting the S4 engine for your requirements.

Ideally I was looking to pay around £2500 for an rs4 engine.
Never going to be a cheap project. As the engine will be mid-mounted I'll also need a a6 2.5 tdi gearbox, Bespoke loom, gear linkages, Exhaust.
Thats before we start looking at Air-to-liquid intercoolers.
I Looked at the s4 engine but it didn't have many advantages over the cheaper m3 e46 engine. If I'm going to spend every evening for the next six months under a car i'd rather spend the extra money and buy the best.
Just need to give up drinking beer and eating..............

Depends on what you class as advantages (clearly not torque or tuneability for you
). I don't think the advantages of an RS4 engine over an S4 one outweigh the extra cost if you are starting from scratch (you would probably want to replace/refurb the turbos on an RS4 engine anyway).
Take a look over on AudiSRS and do a search for Author 'KHM'. He's already built a mid-engined kit car (Pulse GT1) using an RS4 engine. You may be able to pick up some ideas.
Good luck!

Are you taking about the V8 S4 engine? Cause we're not. The 2.7 TT engine out of a B5 S4 is all your going to need.Lozz wrote: I Looked at the s4 engine but it didn't have many advantages over the cheaper m3 e46 engine. The S4 engine which is 2.7 litres is a V6 = 265bhp - with twin turbos - excellent for tuning, and is also the base engine for the B5 RS4 (2000/2001) = 380bhp.Lozz wrote:I was, Didn't realise there was two. I checked the s4 v8 2.7 bi turbo for size and it was a tight fit. How does the size comapare? Is the TT 2.7 engine very different?
The S4 engine in the B6 model car is the 4.2 litre N/A V8 = 344bhp - very limited tuning ability due to the fact it's N/A.
