Milltek Review and First Thoughts
Milltek Review and First Thoughts
So finally got hold of a used Non-Res, Non-Valved Milltek (from Cat back).
It had covered fairly low miles and visually was in excellent condition.
After reading everyone mentioning how much louder the exhaust is over standard I was expecting proper obnoxious Amercan muscle car sounds but that was not the case.
There is a definite improvement in sound levels (and note) but not as loud as I was expecting – perhaps my expectation was a lot higher? Bearing in mind my alternative toy is an R6 with what I can only describe as a 10â€

RE: Milltek Review and First Thoughts
stand behind the car and get someone top blip the throttle...then you'll see how loud it is!! Also, drive with all 4 windows down more now we've got this beautiful weather...the sound is glorious especially past 5k rpm....i never lose the 5k surge on mine
RE: Milltek Review and First Thoughts
A full decat cures the drone and improves the sound even more !
As for power, there is a fair bit of evidence to suggest changing the system without tweaking the maps has a negative effect of performance.

There seems to be a view that Miltek might cause a slight drop in power which only returns if remapped - in which case you should probably end up with more power anyway. Don't know whether thats true or not but have heard it mentioned quite a bit.
Agree the car is a LOT louder outside the car than inside. Get yourself into a tunnel and redline.

Well tonight it became very loud....
Was on my way home from work when the volume increased drastically, pulled into a side street and leant out for a look underneath, sure enough the Y-section which joins onto the cats had separated.
Limped home dipping the clutch on downhill sections and jacked it up for a closer look and to see if I could reconnect but no such luck.
Will be straight back to the garage tomorrow morning to get it sorted out.
Was charged £100+VAT which I thought was a bit on the high side for removal of old exhust and fit customer supplied replacement - especially since it only took about an hour and 15 to do.
Either they didn't nip up the bolts on the clamps or there wasn't enough overlap on the two sections for an effective clamping force.
I was actually in two minds about taking the car to this garage - who I have used in the past with no problems - due to the much younger and dare I say less experienced workforce (17 - 20 year olds).
I know the manager quite well but he wasn't in that day so maybe that was a sign.
My other regular mechanic who is an older chap was busy up until the weekend and I was just wanting it fitted ASAP!
Lesson learnt there methinks.

Always a worry when the engineer is sporting spots and a coot of nuts magazine.
I'm interested in this as I'm wondering about a miltek. I believe your only going to get performance increases combined with a remap. Is this corrected what would be judged as the correct combination of noise and power?

RS4 Saloon (B7)
hope it gets fixed quickly for you Pie.
ask a good friend to drive it for you, giving it the beans in 1st and 2nd (once the engine is warmed up obviously) while you stand at the side of the road. I did this, and trust me it was BLOODY loud!
I think the sound insulation in the cabin on the RS4 must be very good because you dont get an impression how loud it really is, even with all the windows it doesnt give you the full impression.

All fixed.
Went in first thing this morning and they got it up on the ramp straight away. V8 engine, through the downpipes and out the Cat = major racket, especially in morning rush hour
Took them about 40 minutes. Knew from looking at it last night it was more than just reconnecting two pipes in-situ, they must have had to disconnect the rest of the sections and realigned the entire exhaust.
At least I got my moneys worth out of them!
