So why don't they just fit them as standard then?

Good question.
It can't be cost, my guess is that they have to show significant benefits for the RS4 to justifty its hefty price lift over the S4.
I personally find a B7 RS4 hard to justify over the B7 S4, it was an easier choice with B5 S4/RS4 not least because the RS always made the stated power and cost the same to run and didn't have anything extra to go wrong.

I would agree if you were at the time comparing new prices. But now the B7 RS4 is 3-4 years old and used prices there is no compairson. the RS4 is light years ahead in dynamic handling and power delivery over the S4. I had a heavily modified B6 S4 inlcuding uprated front and rear ARB's and more torque than an RS4 it did not get anywhere near the speeds the RS4 does on certain bends, roundabouts and stretches of raod I have tested both on.

S4 is a great car and motorway cruiser however for the B and demanding A roads the RS4 is far better. And as for RS4's not producing the power, don't believe everything you read.
