Fuel Gauge Reading - How Much Left Really?

Post by cobraBLACK » Sun May 16, 2010 2:55 pm

When the fuel gauge is down and the 'miles to go' reading is zero, how much fuel is really left in an S4 (driving at 20-25 mpg)?

My suspicion is that the low level warning quite conservative, I had this come on and did another 15 ish gentle miles on the motorway before filling up, managed to put in 56 litres of fuel. Would not recommend you push your luck as there is a lot of fuel system that would need cleaning out.

There have been so discussions in the B7 RS4 forum about this. Do Audi's suffer with loads of crud in the bottom of the fuel tank or are they ok due to the tank being made of plastic?

Someone said on another forum that it doesn't matter with Audis but I wouldn't take that as the truth without corroboration. Is it just the tank innards; is the fuel clean (assuming any crud might sink to the bottom)?

I would agree with this - I did about the same after the reading had gone to zero, and put about the same into the tank, maybe around 58 litres. Wikipedia reckons that the fuel capacity is 66 litres, meaning there was still a decent amount in reserve.

It's not a nice feeling though, heading up the motorway with the miles-to-go reading zero!!

Sounds like you guys are lucky that the gauges dont read properly. Why leave it so late to fill up?

So you never fill up????
You have to at some point and it's better to not pick up fuel thats been in the tank for soo long plus the lower you leave it the more chance of condensation

I try to only fill up with V-Power, so on a long journey I have certain places I tend to fill up. On that journey I think I must have driven a bit too enthusiastically before my normal fill up spot!
