MTM TCU ( or any quality TCU), does it help TC last longer then with the stock TCU?

Yes, helps protect the TC and helps reduce clutch wear

MTM TCU Question

Post by p3u » Mon May 10, 2010 12:00 am

Have a little poll I'd like to run guys, about the MTM TCU, or any quality TCU for that matter.

Does the TCU map help the TC last longer since it locks up the TC earlier, or does it do nothing for protection, or is it harmful for the TC?

Thanks!

It allows the TC to work properly and lock fully under load. If the TCU isnt remapped to suit the ecu then it'll hunt for gears like a fat boy looking for cake in a slad bar!

Don't know about wear on the clutches etc but in theory it locks the TC earlier so this will allow more torque to be put thru the box - which could reduce the life. Not sure if the Audi torque limit set by the OEM TCU is to protect the TC, the gearbox, or both......generally the more torque into a gearbox stresses it more and will therefore reduce its life.

Ecain63 is correct. I tried an MTM engine ECU remap without the TCU and there was no point - it was hunting gears all the time probably doing more damage and I couldn't get the power down. With the MTM TCU it works properly.

I think its about half a days work on the rollers / soldering /mapping at QST.

Get yourself down to MRC or over to U20. In my opinion a better map!

Not sure if QST will sell a separate TCU chip/map. 1200 is for ECU and TCU. If you tell Kim that you could get the TCU for USD125 in USA he might drop his price for it.....but be warned, there are USA spec cars and ROW spec so they have a different program on the TCU - I think ROW ends in B - you can check this in VAGCOM.

If you can get the correct TCU from USA, see if they will mail just the EPROM and get it soldered locally at a tech shop as this will avoid you sending your TCU to USA. However, far better to get it done properly by MRC, Unit 20 or QST etc.
