Which oil should i use after remap?

Post by sash » Sun Jan 04, 2004 10:23 pm

Hi guys,
got my s4 serviced by AMD a couple of months ago. Before going to AMD it was running on the AVS oil. AMD used their oil, non AVS as far as im aware, during the service.
I just got the 'oil level min' warning light on the way home today, just under 5000 miles after the service at AMD. When I got home and let the car cool I checked the oil and found that there was hardly any left.
Can i go back to the AVS oil and if i do are there any drawbacks to this with a chipped car?
If not AVS then which is the best oil for the s4?
Does the oil filter have to be changed also?

mobil 1 oil is good, i've had that in mine for a few thousand miles its really thin so it gets around the engine really quick, i'd empty what you've got left in your engine and fill it up with mobil 1..

thanx SfourMan
do you know how to drain the remaining oil, is it easy (have to do the oil change on a not very well lit street)?
I take it i dont need to replace the oil filter?

Always heed Dippy's advice about oil.

The only problem with fully synthetic on turbo cars is that sometimes it's too thin.

I tend to use semi-synthetic and change it more frequently (5000-6000 miles)

Ok, this morning went down to Halfords and got some Mobil 1.
Just did an oil change, no filter change.
Must say I was quite impressed, looked like the oil was warming up a little quicker than normal.
Will check again on the way home but it certainly seemed that way. Ill keep you guys posted.

Thorney, which semi-synthetic are you using and have you noticed any benefits over fully synthetic.

Surely thinner oil is what you want on these cold days, isnt it?

AFAIK AmD use Synta Gold which is VAG's own fully-synthetic 0w-30 oil.

Thorney, surely the 'thin' you refer to is the viscosity? Isn't this handled by blending to produce the multigrade just as with mineral oils?

I'm sure you're happy with what you're doing but I tend to note the basic fact that Audi used to insist on fully synthetic oil for all their high performance turbo cars, and in particular the RS4.

Dippy,
Synta gold you said is 0w-30 Mobil 1 is 0w-40. Does this mean that the Synta Gold is a better choice than Mobil 1 for a turbo (s4)?

ahem....ignore my last post. AmD do all my servicing and they use the Syntha gold which is indeed fully synthetic but designed for turbo charged engines (as is Mobil 1).

My point on the thiness of the oil is that turbos can effectively spin oil out if it is too thin.

Officially yes, because Audi specify 0w-30 for the engine. However unless you live in a very cold climate, a 0w-40 oil will be better for you if your engine tends to get hotter than average (as modded ones often do ).

Thanks for that Dippy.
I did not change the oil filter, is this bad for the car?
Does anyone know where i can buy Synta Gold from?

Off topic a but...
I notice from your sig you have a full Milltek exhaust.
I was thinking of getting one also. Im getting AMD to install an RS4 suspension on my S4 and was planning on asking them to do the exhaust at the same time.
Would you say that the Milltek is a valuable addition to a remapped s4?
I have heard that the car is able to deliver torque all the way to the redline with the Milltek, is this true?
Whats the noise level like?
There are also no prices on the AMD website for the Milltek, how much is it roughly for the full system (not including fitting), can you remember?

Except the price on the S4 AmD page

Cats £1140, plus Cat back £415 (or £626 if you are thinking of the K04 upgrade in the future )
All prices +VAT and +fitting.

Thanks biturbo,
Wasnt sure which of those milltek bits i needed.

I will eventually do the KO4 upgrade, will wait for the turbos to blow or about 70000 miles, whichever happens first

Is there any disavantage using the dual with the standard KO3s, apart from cost?
