The switch is in the latch on the hatch (such poetry...)
Activating the latch with the boot wide open turns the light off, and unlocking it again turns it back on, so that is the place to start stripping down.
FWIW, if you have the ignition on and start opening doors you are probably aware that the DIS displays what is open. This is linked to the same system, and is how I noticed that the courtesy light was not working off my drivers door. You might think it odd I didn't notice 'cos the light didn't come on, but don't forget the light comes on when you unlock the car by remote, and also when you pull the key out of the ignition after it has been running.
Re the arming of the alarm with doors open - you should be able to pre-arm it with any door open (including boot) except the drivers door. On shutting the door, the alarm should then arm and the lights flash to acknowledge. This won't happen until all doors are shut.
Personally, I was a little disappointed the faulty switch on mine didn't show up on VAG-COM
Avant 'cargo compartment' light
Re: Avant 'cargo compartment' light
Thanks Andy, I'll be stripping down my hatch one day this week or next.
It's times like this that I'm so glad that this forum exists!
I also re-read my Bentley guide and it does mention pulling the sealant strip away in order to release the lower trim. The strip seems to be well stuck on so I'm glad I don't have to remove it now!
PaulR,
My light was intermittent like yours before it stopped working altogether, so it looks like you'll have to do the same as me. I'll post after I have done the work.

Re: Avant 'cargo compartment' light
Thanks. I look forward to the info. Mean time I thought I'd caught it yesterday with a good old latch lube, but back to normal this morning.

Re: Avant 'cargo compartment' light
Paul,
See my new post.
Lubing the switch does not seem to have provided a permanent solution so it seems that I must buy a new latch.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Avant 'cargo compartment' light
Cheers Dave. Sounds like the door microswitches are all a bit suspect, (re the other recent posts about keys locked in!) Shame this one is integral with the latch. I guess it's still worth giving a go (as you did) before submitting to a new latch.
Thanks, ... Paul.
