m5 vs RS4

Post by drbru » Thu Mar 18, 2010 1:39 pm

Hi guys

New to this forum so would appreciate any help and advice you can give...

Ive been after a new car which can take the family and provide me with some "fun" on the weekend...

Im currently in search of an RS4 avant or M5 and have no more than 35K to spend.... I have to admit I am leaning towards the RS4 but there seem to be quite a lot of bargains out there for the m5....

in addition, I have not driven either yet but have heard great things about both...Please help me decide!

The car will obviously need to carry all the usual baby stuff and even do a yearly trip to the alps....

Really dont know which to get!

Any advice much appreciated!

Both great, the RS4 is more compact and better fuel consumption and will keep better residuals. Extended warranty, however, is much more expensive than that for a BMW. RS4 is better looking, but that's subjective. I never liked the Bangle BMW designs.

Here's what 35k will get you.

The M5 Touring would be my choice if I went the M5 route, will be more sought after in years to come than the saloon. Awesome power 500 ps compared to 420 fo the Audi, and last of V10 normally aspirated engines.

The 4wd versus the 2wd personal preference is also crucial - I would drive both. If an M3 Touring existed, that would have made your decision really difficult.

How big is the family?

Rear legroom in the RS4 is a bit tight. Room for a rear-facing baby seat, though, and a forward facing car seat.

From what I understand the SMG box in the M5 is a bit marmite - you either like it or you don't.

I recently had the same "problem"

I was changing out my very beloved M3 E46 convertible to either an RS4 or an M5 saloon, i tried them both.

The M5 was actually my number one choice until i tried it, i found it very big (coming from an M3) although it has 500 HP it didn't quite feet like it. The one i tried was with headup display and all sorts of extra gimmick so that was very cool. And i love the SMG which i also had in my m3 so i was kind of used to it, but like stated above either you hate it or you don't.

Then i tried the Audi and i felt more comfortble in it, i went with an avant which to me is the best looking RS4, even though it's an stationcar it still fells small and nimble and easy to drive around in (i do a lot of city driving) plus the sound of this V8 is so addicting compared to the M's V10.

It has to be the RS4 Avant, better looking inside & out (far more special), better to drive in all conditions and the added security of quattro. Autocar did a track & road test a year or so back with the RS Avant against the M5 & Merc E AMG and in spite of having less power, the RS absoloutely trounced the others in the wet whilst matching them in the dry. If you're off to the Alps skiing then the RS has no competition, as the road testers say with the RS4 you can use 90% of the power 90% of the time. I was convinced and bought one and it's going to take something pretty special to replace it. Good luck.

That sums it up well really, the M5 will have more rear legroom though if thats a serious consideration, alot of bargains in the M5 department should tell you something about demand of the M5 compared to the RS4

Be4 I bought rs I had same problem. Just wanted coupe - m6 (same - perfect engine - V10 is best). Why did I choose rs?

- RS +quattro
- RS +recaro seat (I love ultimate racing look and feeling with car)
- M6 -problems with vanos (like e39)
- M6 -heard about problems with SMG (not cheap servise)
- M6 -image of manager car (this is sily :) )

Now Im owner of RS. I have some problems. But this car is for fun.

v10 is best me not think so...sounds a bit to high pitched or queer sounding... v8 is the right note a true man's sound..

Like it or not. V10 is better concept than V8. I don't care sound I wanted rs4 for performance. And V10 5.0 outperformed V8 4.2. Every cylinder has 0.5l. This is less then one cylinder in V8 4.2 -> high revs. I love hi revs engines and BMW 5.0 has red line 8250 :). Bigger engine = bigger torque 5.0 has 520 N.m. And last and very important thing is 378 BMW kWs :)

AND WHO CARES SOUND? :)

Look, I love my RS like everyone here but don't try to race on dry surface any M6 driven by some1 with big balls. :)

Don't kill me. 1000 persons = 1000 opinions

EDIT: http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/ ... 380a0.html

Look at 0-200. M6 minus 2.2secs? It's terrible different. Coz of SMG? May be...

Just from a little bit of hands on with the M5....
Despite what all the pub figures say in the real world it only ever feels a fast car if you have enough road room to safely rev it out past 6000 and keep it there.
Underneath 4000 revs there is so little torque I found it irritating to drive.
Again unless the V10 engine is at high revs it sounds agricultural and even a bit diesel like to my ears!
They are amazingly cheap to pick up now but many seem to have a fondness for going back to the dealership workshops regularly.

I don't think many would disagree with the idea that the E60 M5 is a good car but...

The RS4 also revs to 8250.

Its faster round The Ring despite its power deficit. From A to B through the country, I imagine there would be little in it?

Try driving a M-series car in the wet without scaring yourself silly. Like a C63 perhaps?

I think most folk going for the RS4 appreciate what a difference Quattro makes.

8:13 for the M5 compared to 8:09 for 200kg lighter RS4 with Ceramics - there is really nothing in it for anyone, including a professional driver. I would contend the RS4 would be more chuckable in the A to B country roads.

Try driving a Porsche GT3 (or a 996 GT2  ) in the wet, and it's the same for most drivers. But these cars are coveted as the ultimate driving machines because in the default dry situation, they provide a sensation only a 2rwd can provide. The quattro is wonderful and the RS5 treatment of it (up to 85% to the rear) is something I really look forward to.
