Yes, he basically said was I to have driven it much more in that state and he had no doubt that the box would have been seriously damaged. Yes was a bit of an ouch but could have been triple that and maybe more! At least I know where to take it if it does go bang :-) very very knowledgeable chap and only £45/hour!

JD,

Not wishing to poopoo your man, but that is an awful lot of money.

The oil would be mostly free of debris becasue it would be stuck to the magnets in the sump, accsesable by dropping the sump cover and changing the filter at the same time. A job that the GB certainly does not have to come out for.

I think I would be asking some more questions mate. I have a feeling Minhea is thinking the same......

Mooch, my main concern is that the GB can't come out unless the engine is out and that's 40 hours flat in and out pretty much... see where I'm going with this? ;)

Removal & refit is a big job , 25hours ...

Can't see how they can do it ....

I was told of 1 gearbox company that recon they can remove the diff then the turbo and drop the box ....Sounds like a lot of hard work instead of dropping the engine

I think it is clear the gearbox was not removed.

Maybe he just mean't the sump cover!

I agree with the above - I think that to do the seals he refers to is an engine out/gb out job which is serious work. If he charged you almost 700 quid for doing work that was not removing the GB and basically refitting the hose and changing the ATF/filters etc then it sounds a lot.

Well to be honest with you all, I am very sceptical. On the one hand its fixed and cost less than I thought it might. But on the otherhand, it;s niggling me that there is some serious overcharging going on. I will ask what seal was replaced and how the GB was removed or whether what was replaced didnt actually involve taking the GB out. This is not over with. I just want some answers and go from there.

OK - feedback. Sent email to guy to query process he did. Reckons gearbox can come out without engine. He replaced the seal which goes between the pump and the torque convertor. Those in the know will know more about where that is located. Personally, I bet its accessible via the gearbox sump or something.

I did not think the GB can be dropped without the engine as the turbos and other stuff get in the way and you have no access to drop it. I might be wrong but that is what all the experts told me when I needed to relace the TC and the same seal......

Well that is what I believed too hence why it was quite a shock to hear that he had removed/refitted it - especially now as you say the seal I mentioned can only be accessed by removeing the GB.

So, is it definately not possible or is it just better/easier to remove all of it in one lump. Can it not be unbolted and moved enough to gain access to what he replaced. i.e just enough to get a hand in or something???? He did add that it was very difficult to get to.

I had a new box fitted when I purchased mine, I'm sure they didn't take the whole engine out to do it?!.. I'll ask the question and come back..
