RS4 (B5) or early RS6?

Post by andyleeds » Wed Jan 20, 2010 12:11 am

hi everyone, i have posted a couple of posts on here, before but it looks like that i might be able to get into a fast estate but i have a quandary.

am i better off in an early RS4 prob something around a 2000 car or should i get into a a slightly later RS6 as they would seem to be a similar sort of price.

i think that the rs6 would be more money to run but i like the idea of the bigger rs6 as i do alot of skiing etc so the space would be handy as i wouldnt necessarily need a ski rack, also the extra performance might be nice etc.

on the rs4 side of things am guessing the performance is still quite good, less space but less cash, and may well cost lost to run. do they have the ski hatch option like the rs6 has

one question i am not sure about, which would be the easier to sell on after a couple of years, which would depreciate more? i realise that this is not the reason to buy a car, but i think that it should be taken into acct.

i have just got out of a 993, so although not the quickest car, no slouch either, would an early rs4 be a good first step?

am happy to spend anywhere between £13k to £20k so am obviously not after a minter, but just a good honest car. with not stella mileage on it.

i am going to put this on the rs6 forum too, so hopefully i will get some opinions from all side of the fence.

cheers

andy

Hi Andyleeds, i was in a similar situation about 2 years ago prior to the wife expecting. I managed to hold onto my 993. I look at both these options. In the end i plucked for the RS6. Why? It can do everything the RS4 can do and more. Yes RS6s will probably cost more to run , however i think the price differential has closed down more (when i was looking sub 30k rs6s were £30-34k but a good rs4s was around £20-24k. and i found the interior of the old rs4 a little dated. Furthermore i found it hard to find a good example with less than 60k miles. The RS4 is more special due to limited numbers but i think this cache has diminished given the success of the new model. RS4s are smaller but more agile and some would say more tunable. I thought the rs6 was a good compromise as you get decent space in the back seats ( especially when it comes to fitting child seats) and boot plus you get a very high standard spec in the rs6. Find yourself a good example ( and ideally a warranty) and you should be problem free...

A big question is whether you want manual or auto?

am happy with either to be honest, i would just like to get a decent one, with not too many miles on at a fair price....there seems to be a few people expecting to get top dollar, i have just sold my 993 which was a good one and i had to do a deal on that, but i have got the cash sat in the bank ready to go for the right car....so i will keep looking.

The RS6 comes with a ski hatch as standard which is kind of cute ... I've only used it once, to take a shrub round to the mother in law without getting crud all over the leather :-)

If you like throwing it at corners then the RS4 is probably the better choice. The RS6 is much heavier, and feels it. But the power is addictive and I wouldn't replace mine for anything.

i ski alot and i have to say driving down to the alps is quite appealing

i have listed some likely suspects below so any comments welcomed, has anyone seen or know any of the cars?....i would look to get money knocked off for any cars that have not had the drc replaced, what sort of numbers is it for a straight forward set up?

i think that i would need to get from a dealer aswell as i would want to use finance to get the car, i could though buy private if the deal was attractive enough.

thanks for your continuing help.

Believe me, the RS6 saloon boot is enormous, easilly manages a shed load of luggage.

hope you got out mate.... ;-)

i have found a possible suspect, does anyone know this car?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2004-54-Audi-RS6- ... 335859f6bd

reg is LR54 JXL.....

has full main dealer history, has had the drc replaced; not sure about the rest but should be able to get some info fromthe vraious dealers. has had the front bumper sprayed and apparently there is a small scratch on the bonnet; that would be the only downside it would seem. am thinking that an inspection might be a good idea, what are everyones thoughts?

I also would love a B5 RS4. But no way I could give up the 6. I think I'm going to have to get both. It's obviously the way forward!
