Strange, I'm running 275/30/19 Goodyear Assymetrics on mine and unfortunately hit a huge pothole in Surrey just before Christmas that put a bulge in the sidewall of the nearside front. Replaced both front tyres that had approx 3k miles on and no sign of rubbing on either (specifically checked when they swapped the tyres). I've got H&R coilovers so the car is a bit lower than standard, but definitely no clearance issues. When was the last time your alignment was checked?

It was last checked in May 09.

I'll let these new tyres bed-in then get it along for a check.

The damage to the tyres wasn't on the wall, it was a few milli into the tread and only a thin gouge (you can see a string of the tread that's come away in one of the pictures). I can only assume that something’s been coming down on top of the tyre to cause the damage, rather than something rubbing on the wall (if that makes sense).

It'll be infront of someone far more knowledgeable in the next few weeks...

I've had exactly the same damage on my tyres. It's caused by the suspension allowing the tyre to contact the inner wheelarch on full bump. There is a protrusion on the inner upper edge of the plastic intercooler protector which can be removed. This lessens the chances of trashing your tyres, but doesn't totally eliminate it. Only slowing down on the lumpy stuff or fitting extra bump stops would cure it.

Spacecowboy - that is classic rubbing on the "Knobbly bit" - you can just see the lower edge of it in the middle picture where the tyre passes the metal support arm of the suspension.

Rupert - in my experience wrongly set Camber can certainly cause excess wear on the inside edge of the tyre, and will eventiually scrub it through to the canvas, but I have never known it cut or groove a tyre off the running face. In the bottom piccie above the actual tyre wear doesn't look too bad, there's just the damage to the shoulder.
