Just come across this thread which might be of interest to you. It could be a programming issue, but you'd need a vagcom to check. Maybe there's someone near you with one that could help you out. I personally think that a vagcom is an essential maintenance tool for these cars! Never stops being useful. Anyway, have a look from post #11 down:

I have found that quite a few wierd faults can be sorted by this simple trick.
Failing that then it's a vagcom jobbie.
