Request for gents with a data logger:

Post by ArthurPE » Fri Dec 18, 2009 4:57 pm

if capable and willing I would like to see some in gear runs:

3rd gear 3000 to 8000 rev/min
average of 3 runs
note: weather conditions, dyno rating if known and any performance mods

just did 4 runs:
32F, high humidity, 1/4 tank fuel, driver only, times with OBC, 3000-8000 rpm (36 to 96 mph, actual)
8.0 level ground
8.0 level ground
8.4 up grade
8.7 up grade, steeper
avg <8.3
avg level 8 flat
60 mph increase in 8 sec on level ground

C&D ~35 to 95, 8 sec...using 2nd gear from a standstill!
0-30 1.7
0-40 2.5
0-90 9.1
0-100 11.1
est 0-95 ~ 10.1 and 0-35 2.1
10.1 - 2.1 ~ 35 to 95 ~ 8 sec

AM & S
0-37 2.4
0-99 10.9
36/37 x 2.4 ~ 2.3 for 36
96/99 x 10.9 ~ 10.5 for 96
10.5 - 2.3 ~ 8.2 for 36 to 96
again with a full run using second gear

R&T (they make it easy, they have a graph)
0-36 ~ 1.8
0-96 ~ 9.8
9.8 - 1.8 ~ 8 sec

another R & T (M3 comparo)
10.1 - 2 ~ 8.1

test average ~ 8 sec...
these are all flying runs, with momentum, using all gears to redline...
my runs were from 2500, squeeze, time at 3000 to 8000 all 3rd gear...

seems like my car is fine, actually I'm rather amazed at its peformance...

I can't wait to do some 30-90 runs using 2nd & 3rd:
avg of all 4 mags ~ 7.35 sec...from a standstill using all gears...

from a roll using second 30-90 I should be able to get close to 7 flat, we'll see...

4 more runs, rolling start ~20 mph, 2nd gear 2000 rpm, timed 30 to 90 (actual, speedo is ~+4 as GPS verified), ~25F, dry, >3/4 tank with wife (120 lbs)
7.7 (first run, getting the hang of it)
7.3
7.4
7.0
avg ~ 7.35, exactly what the mags did from a dead start, using 1st to start...1st is good to ~40 mph
considering I start at ~30 mph or 3000 rpm, I'm not even in the power band which is >4500 or so...(1st redline to second shift puts rpm ~ 4800)
I am confident that my numbers would be better than the tests if I started from a roll ~10 mph in first....
I am confident my car is making rated power, and in this case (low temp/humid) probably better...

next up, 6th gear, 50-70
R&T 6.6 sec
AM & S 80 to 120km/hr, ~49.6 to 74.4 8.6, extrapolating for 70 ~6.8 or so
C&D 50-70 6.4
avg~ 6.6 sec

also will try 4th only 80 to 140 km/hr (~50 to 87), AM & S ~ 7.7

EVO magazine usually prints a very in depth in gear accel chart when they test a car (much more useful than the usual US accel runs), did they do one for the RS4? If so, anybody have a copy?

well, no one responded...so I remembered the timer on the car!
durrrr, finally :D never really use it, leave it parked on mpg or something...

it's easy to use and accurate, human error is pretty much cancelled out...if you tap it a touch late start/finish, no harm....

I am very surprised (pleasantly) at the results, summary:
3rd gear, 3k to 8k ~35 to 95 mph ~ 8 sec, same as the tests got using ALL gears

30-90 mph, 2nd/3rd, rolling ~7.35 sec (best of 7 sec flat), same as mag tests using ALL gears
with a passenger...for my method 30 mph starts at 3000 rpm, where as the tests were at ~4500+ at 30 mph...big advantage...

I would be interested in seeing the results from others...
tickets are not my responsibility :D

btw, another post by me in MY thread :D

Come on Arthur - the last one is in German!!
And with what little German I know - it seems the M3 is on top by 1 point. You don't happen to have an M3 as well do you Arthur??

Have a good Christmas and New Year.

I've never used the timer in the car - maybe I'll read the instructions and get back to you with some times.
Unfortunately will have to wait till some better (dryer) days. The snow does hinder times a tad.

yes, I have an e46 M3

but the reason for posting was the data panel on the left...
it has in gear times 4/5/6 from 80 km to various speeds (km) in each gear
Elastizitat (elasticity or engine flexibilty)
for example 4th 80 to 160 takes 10.2 (~50 to 100 mph)
or in 5th 12.8 sec...
you can also do splits, say 5th 100 to 180 = 16.8 - 3 = 13.8 sec (62 mph to 112 mph)

and a Merry Christmas to you!
