What track day car?

I know most of us use our pride and joys on the track, but as a second "Track Day car" what would it be?

Iv been toying with a BMW e30 1.8, or even a MK2 Golf, there typical TD cars, cheap to run and maintain.

Ring bunnies are
Golf MK1/2
generally stripped out with some improvements to suspension, internally welded cage, tyres , brakes
Harnesses and seat, not really that much done to engines from what i have seen, as most are bombproof!
Lots of cheap parts available and low maintainance.
These suckers give most things a run for there money as usually the drivers skill outweigh the cars performance.
The BMWs are there also ...but more expensive to maintain and parts harder to source and buy.
Although all said and done if you can get yourself a s/h westfield or caterham, their personally in a different league around most small curcuits and the overall driving expirence is far better.

Yes im feeling the MK2 as iv owned and 2 previous, im looking a getting into more track days, and want to be doing the work instead of the car.
I did look into the open seaters, but they are still fetching good money, so something less than 1k will be reasonable.

16V everytime !!! if you lower it, make sure you agust the bias valve or you will end up i a tree like me first time you put the anchors on !

I'd say 8v for a road car, 16v for a track car.
But then if i was building a track slag it'd have to be rwd, so i'd be looking for an E30 318iS (if you can find a good one) or an E30 325i.
Mind you, for not much more money you can pick up an E38 328i sport and with relatively minor modifications they make very capable track cars with over 210bhp. They're also quite heavy, but VERY easy to lighten.
