Remote opening boot lid
Remote opening boot lid
My car didn't have the option of the remote opening boot lid so I've decided to upgrade it myself. I've picked up the gas struts today from Audi. The struts are solid or at least they appear to be when trying to move them by hand. I will try and fit them tomorrow. Is it a simple swap out job for the old ones? I thought I would have got some movement from the new struts by pushing them hard by hand but they're rock solid.
If anyone has done this mod can they offer any tips/advice? Thanks

RE: Remote opening boot lid
are the struts different?
my car just unlatches the trunk and pops it open an 1" or so
do you have a push button for the trunk insde?
I would think it would be a programming change and perhaps a new key fob (mine has a seperate button for the trunk)

RE: Remote opening boot lid
They will be rock solid mate, I did this mod to the bonnet of a old VW Golf. you wont push them in, it need the weight and momentum of the boot closing.
I will be interested in hearing how you get on as this i one mod that I would like to carry out. im sure there is more to it than just the struts, did you ask Audi for any guidance?
What did they cost?
EDIT: you push and hold the "trunk" button in order for it too pop open.

Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar
RE: Remote opening boot lid
Mine didn't come with this either, will be watching this thread for advice as wouldn't mind the remote opeing boot. What where the parts numbers if you don't mind me asking?
RE: Remote opening boot lid
Part number is: 8E5 827 552 J x 2off
When I ordered the parts, the Audi parts guy checked on the system and said "which ones do you want as there are two part numbers listed?". He then looked a bit further and saw that there was a standard part listed and a separate part no. for remote opening which is the part no. I've quoted above.
The struts cost (hold your breath!) £25 each but I thought it would be a mod worth doing for fifty quid. Hopefully it will be plain sailing tomorrow when I try and fit them!
I'll let you know how I get on.

The key fob will be different also - has a pic of the boot on it.karl wrote:Part number is: 8E5 827 552 J x 2off

RE: Re: RE: Remote opening boot lid
My keyfob's already got a separate button for the boot (with a pic on it) but if I hold it down for 3 secs, the boot will just unlock and raise about an inch which I believe is what it does as standard?
Re: RE: Re: RE: Remote opening boot lid
yes, this standard...karl wrote:My keyfob's already got a separate button for the boot (with a pic on it) but if I hold it down for 3 secs, the boot will just unlock and raise about an inch which I believe is what it does as standard?
are you saying there are struts that will raise the trunk full open?
hmmmm....might have to check into that
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Remote opening boot lid
iv got auto boot opening (fully) BUT, if I unlock the car, I cant unlock the boot with my hand like any normal car...It only lets me open it if I do the key fob and it opens itself
it must be broken ?

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Remote opening boot lid
mine allows you to depress the switch under the plate lip to pop it open if te car is unlockeddavidkoulakis wrote:iv got auto boot opening (fully) BUT, if I unlock the car, I cant unlock the boot with my hand like any normal car...It only lets me open it if I do the key fob and it opens itself

All fobs are the same and will work, the only difference is the spring/damper rates in the strut which give the force required to fully open the lid.
David - I can solve your problem, I had it following fitting SDS. Turns out it's to do with the position your manual key lock on the boot is in i.e. vertical/horizontal. I used the key to open the boot after disconnecting the battery, the only time I needed to. It drove me mad for days until I figured it out! It's a sort of anti-boot theft feature...

The auto opening of rear boot can only be done when the car is locked. The boot on mine opens a few inches but after a light coating of grease on all the linkages, now fully opens. I thought this was the remote opening facility and if your car has this, the key fob has a pic of the boot.
When the car locks are open, the rear boot can only be opened by pressing the release under the number plate light.
Some cars (VWs) have a switch near the boot lock which prevents the boot being opened when the locks are opened (stops people opening boot when your stuck in traffic).

I'll try this tomorrow, and if it works, I owe you a pint !pippyrips wrote:All fobs are the same and will work, the only difference is the spring/damper rates in the strut which give the force required to fully open the lid.

Not so, all RS4s have boot opening on the fob, just some only release the lock while others pop the lid fully open. Auto opening worked on mine whether open or locked.aidanjaye wrote:The auto opening of rear boot can only be done when the car is locked. Afaik Avants never had the fully opening option.
