Towbar for S4

Post by jammyhl » Mon Dec 08, 2003 8:08 pm

I'd like to fit a detachable towbar to a 1998 S4 Avant. Can you recommend a make and does the rear skirt need to be cut? Any idea how much this is going to set me back?

Come on guys - I know towbars aren't quite as exciting as REVO remapping ECU's or lowered suspension heights but I bought this car as a practical sports car (goes alongside my 456...) and I'm being given the run around by my Audi garage who claim that the S4 can't support a towbar (despite a couple being listed on this site with one)..

so maybe some of you experts could drag yourselves away from all those bhp vs lb/ft questions for a few seconds and help me out?

Thanks,

James

Hi there, i dont know too much about them but im pretty sure Audi made them for most cars and they didnt need to cut any bumper sections.

The usually have to fit a section to the car under the bumper where the two section fits onto, this can then be removed when not in use.

I dont have a part number for the tow bar kit but im sure your local dealership might be able to advice.

I definately have one of Audi's removable towbars on my car. Not sure of any part codes though

I think that the removeable versions had to be factory fitted, but definately try vagparts

There was a brand new genuine Audi one on eBay a couple of months ago. It was a removable 'swan neck' type. They are not just factory fit.
I'm pretty sure someone here bought it in the end. Try doing a search as I am sure they posted the fact that they sniped it at the last minute.

I saw that too carps.

I got outbid in the last few seconds

Audi state that they do not make tow bars for the S4 supposedly due to possibly damaging the quattro drive system. I queried this as they offer them for other quattros in the A4 range.

After chasing the dealer I got a "sorry, we simply don't know the answer"

They definitely are available, and do not require cutting the rear bumper. However....
There are two types and if you get the wrong one it will not fit. The only reason I know this is because people like witter, towsure, etc list two seperate kits.

btw, fitting requires removal of the entire rear bumper.

Cheers,
John.

I just did a search of this forum.

Here is a snip from a post made by Ian_W in connection with towbars for RS4s.

"when I had my S4 I enquired about the detachable ones and was told the part number was 8D5092155B and was 700 UKP fitted (it was about 4 years ago. I don't think that one fits the RS4 though, and I don't think the standard A4 quattro bars fit the S4 something different at the rear end
"

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

John,

Funny 'cos I had an idea it was someone called John that got it ! Perhaps it wasn't someone here that won in the end - I may have just remembered you were also involved in the bidding. I was only in it for a bargain, and it all got a bit serious in the last few minutes...

Your right, the price went crazy, so I put in
the most I was prepared to pay and still got outbid.

Maybe someone else on here got it but it wasn't me

Sorry Jammy I know nothing - But you got my attention.

Don't let UK Audi parts folk put you off. Last month they told me there was only one type of tail light for the A4. On with a clear reversing light. You don't get a smoked one they said. They were adamant it was a max power thing. O do you thinks so Mr. Audi parts man that'll explain how all the specialist Audi breakers ask which year and lense I would like i.e. clear or smoked and by the way here is the part number which is completely different from the £93 one you sold me!

To be fair they can only go by what's on there computer.

It'll be nice to know how you get on
