New Owner.....couple of questions!

Post by will1981 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 5:27 pm

Hi Guys
I recently purchased an 01 S4 Avant with 88k and FSH which is in fantastic condition, however I have noticed a vibration on full lock when I set off?
I went to a specialist who told me it could be the quattro transfer box?
The second one is a slight bump when changing gear unless i'm really smooth with the clutch?
Other than that i'm really happy with the car, its standard apart from forge dv's.
Cheers
Will

the s4 has no transfer box...could be numerous things including engine/gearbox mounts, best to let someone look at it who knows what they are doing....

Ha - 01 S4 Avant but only 83K here :)

From your description I can offer the following advice:
1) Vibration on full lock: I've had this and remember other B5 S4 owners reporting the same, so I'm sure that it's a characteristic of the model. From my own limited experimentation, I believe it will be worse with certain tyres and indeed the standard suspension. If it is only at low speed and full lock then I am 99% sure you should not worry about it.
2) The B5 S4 has rather clunky gearchange. There are two fairly common improvements: (a) a short-throw shifter (you must have noticed how long the standard throw is); (b) tighten up the transmission - I have a DTS (drivetrain stabiliser) which does the job, but there are other mods such as snub mount (front of engine) which can help too. Do a search and you'll get a lot of reports.

Does your FSH include cambelt change?

Cheers Guys!

Dippy, cambelt done at audi last year @80k.
Its only a problem when the car has warmed up as there is no vibration when I first set off?
Fitting decat downpipes and a milltek in jan then off for remap, so may fit some ap coilovers or just eibach springs?

Not sure then, as I never experimented with my car. However if you check your manual it warns against using full lock for too long (and it is common to get some noise from the pump on full lock). Maybe the vibration is related to the power steering, and also temperature related? In any case if there's no problem with steering in non-full lock then I'd say there's nothing to worry about.

My H&R coilovers were the best mod I ever did. Transformed the handling.
