Hi - yet another one of the "Fiat Boys" invading

Must say - this is one of the most civilised "Fiat versus XXX" threads I've ever seen (apart from the "deluded" comment on the first post - check your info before posting - some coops are well above 300bhp - IIRC the record is over 500).

Most non-Coupe owners have absolutely no idea about its standard perfomance or its tuning potential. Nice to see that many of the comments on here give the Coupe some respect. A standard 220bhp from a seven year old design isn't bad at all, and with bigger bhp from not much money (mines at a dyno'd 210 at the wheels from less than £400 spent) the Coop really can be classed as a giant-killer.

I think you'll find that no-one on the Coop forum expects to beat one of the more powerful Audis, but most would have a go anyway, just to show that we're up for a tussle.

For the record, I'm the Coop owner that got jumped by an RS4 (I think) when in my 355 - so I've no misconceptions about any of the RS cars. As I mentioned - it took me until just short of 2.5 times the motorway speed limit before I finally hauled him in. BIG respect

So, were not deluded - we expect to get beaten by just about any of the Avants, but we fully expect to surprise you at how competitive the Fiat can be.

Plus of course, we might be beaten, but at least we looked bloody good at the same time

Oh, just a little reminder on how things change:
Went today to a VW dealer to look at a Golf R32..... obviously i had high hope`s as its `supposedly a better car` compared to the old dog (S3)...... but i cant seem to see what all the fuss was about...... all credit to the sales rep as he tried very hard to tempt me to make the move to the R32..... first impressions were not what i expected..... cheapy BMW type plasticy leather... not even electric..... standard wheel arches, grill`s, mirror as base models...... and i thought lets here the beast..... he rev`ed it very hard but its wasnt really that loud and nowhere like a M3...... i didnt bother asking him for a test drive and just told him i wouldnt get insured and walked away.

If the car doesnt give me that special feel right from setting eyes on it then im not intrested..... it may out performe and out handle the S3 etc but its noway a classier motor car...... even the front side lower grills where fake.... poo!

There nothing that really sparkles about the R32..... didnt do it for me and am glad to keep my S3 another few years.....

come on now Riz, we all know you've sneakily tuned your S3...

To which i replied to under the S3 section as follows :-
Changed my mind, simple as that really, after a more closer inspection i like it and the plus that i can get insured on it on my own policy.

There`s no replacement for displacement

So the Fiat badge makes it look crap then??

Agree about the badge-snobbery - many Coop owners would rather it have an Alfa badge, I suppose. I also agree that Fiat have made only a few desirable cars, but the Coop surely has to be one of them.

However, its one of those cars whose looks you either love or hate. Clearly, we all love it on the Coop forum, but we don't expect anyone else to (although its nice when they do).

I'm not struck on S3's (Golf with a grille?) but I love the slightly menacing, but subtly understated looks of the big bhp Avants.

Wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same, and liked the same cars.

Whatever you think about the Coop's looks, it can't be denied that it is one of the most individual designs to come out of ANY factory in the last ten years. It still doesn't look like any other car and still wipes the floor with other perfomance "cult-cars" (RS Focus?? - they ranted about 212bhp from 2 litres - old hat).

You pays your money, you makes your choice.

Now't wrong with the Coupe's styling in my book, isn't it a Pininfarina design, or have I got that -backwards?

No probs with a Fiat badge either - bit of Italian flair and at least it's not like GM cars where one platform makes a million variants. Oh, hang on - Skoda, Seat, VW, Audi... Oh !

Is it just me, or does the reference to coop make the rest of you think of Co-Op and shopping trolleys...

Unlike Jeff I'm not having a dig. Fine cars and all that, just not my cup of tea.

Nigel - 355. Respect due mate.
Is the 355 a weekend toy, or what ?

Cheers,
John.

Was the 16V turbo unit derived from the Integrale?
There's a 20VT in yellow in my car park and it does look good still. Bit of a timeless design I reckon.

Cheers

Andy, it would be interesting to know how much cash you've spent on cars over the years - especially if you've had a history of tuning like your recent RS4 endevours
