Scared to buy an RS6!

Post by chesney » Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:03 pm

1st post so hi :D

Was considering buying an RS6 avant and initially I was just concerned about the MPG as I'll be coming from a diesel 5 series! Link for anyone looking for one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1256055.htm

had a remapped S3 a couple of years ago and didn't have any real issues with it so reading about the DRC and gearbox issues has concerned me. I'd probably go for one with the DRC replaced unless it had a very good warranty.

Anyone used a warranty outwith Audi and had no issues getting repairs done?

Most of the miles I do are in a 150PD golf which has had a good few mods to make it fun and it takes everthing I throw at it and touch wood in 6 years its not needed anything other than regular servicing. So the RS6 would be for the odd fun trip to work and mainly for karting 3 kids and stuff around at weekends.

I'm pretty handy with doing most work needed on my cars but expect some areas of the RS6 will require specialist rather than a weekend mechanic!

Also tend to get my cars remapped. Not just for the extra grunt but as I want better economy. 90% of my driving is very taking it easy but I've done a fair bit of track drving in my time and like the odd spirited drive and like a car with plenty of poke for overtaking the growing number of Sunday drivers out there!!

Anyone with a remap that can advise if its helped the economy. A bit of digging I found a post where somebody's wife got 26mpg on a motorway run!!! I was thinking the way I drive I'd maybe get 20mpg from it.

Had a twin turbo legacy a while back and managed 34mpg out of that!

The RS6 is not a car to buy if you are in the slightest concerned about fuel economy. I spent £400 on fuel last weekend alone

Don't worry about DRC and gearboxes. Budget for new suspension (which you would on a 6 year old sports car anyway) and the gearbox will last if you take care of it.

The engine is solid. And if you're handy with a spanner, there's plenty you can do yourself.

For info, I have never done better than 20mpg (measured). And that's cruising at 75 with the cruise control on.

welcome and you wont regret getting an RS 6 when you do take the jump

mines remapped and I can get just about 30mpg on a London to Brum run on cruise control @ 70mph - thou thats indicated (by the DIS) and so true may be less

mines also under audi warranty and for sale - but its a saloon (guessing your after an Avant)

No need to be scared to get one, there's plenty of good ones that come available on this site, one especially good avant available at the mo (with audi warranty)

The only time to be scared is when your flooring it with TC off !

Cheers for the replies guys.

If you get near 30mpg on the motorway @ 70 I think the road I travel to work is more economical than the motorway so should be able to get close to that for day to day driving.

LOl yeah the US MPG makes it look worse. Noticed this on the BMW as when I got it it was set for US MPG and I was a bit worried something was amiss til I discovered it!

Yeah it would be an Avant I would go for. Personal opinion but I prefer it plus it has more practicality for all the kids gear. i know some despise estates but I quite like them!

Was a nice one on PH for 13.5k that seems to have been looked after by a guy with a good rep on here (unit 20). Been using some car valuation sites and as a private sale it looks a tad over book for 100k miles but sounds well maintained. 100k miles does put me off a bit having 2 turbo's to potentially worry about though.

The turbos aren't a weak point on the RS6. Someone on here had one with over 200k miles on the clock. I'd much rather have a higher mileage well cared for car than a low mileage dodgy one. PLus the advantage of having lots of miles on the clock is that you don't care about putting more on!

I also prefer the avants. Uh oh, we're gonna start another Avant / Saloon war ;)

Yeah best avoid that and just agree that we all like what we like and respect that. Seen too many arguements on forums when at the end of the day does it really matter LOL!

And i dont give a <beep>.....

At 200mph your getting about 5mpg. Thats brilliant in my book...... It made my day!

no war, avants are cool 8) [but my saloon is cooler!]

I wouldnt worry an ouce about milage IF its been maintained correctly and cared for by an enthusiast, and even less if its under Audi Warranty

The built quality on these cars is ridiculously good

The ONLY way to get anywhere near the manufacturer extra urban figure of 29mpg is using cruise control at 60-70mph on a straight road, in my experience

any other type of driving in the RS 6 does not get near, more like low 21mpg, if you do mixed driving

Actually quite constructive, thanks

5mpg @ 200mph is not that bad really. Mate at work has an RS4 with a lot of MTM work on it and got his MPG average down to 4mpg the other night. Think he sucked 3/4 tank over 50 miles and was allegedly doing 175mph somewhere. Def a bit mental and asking for a prison sentence for doing that but he assured me he did it somewhere safe with no oncoming traffic...oh well thats ok then
