Gearboxes?

Post by mattler » Sat Oct 31, 2009 9:01 pm

Just wondering, we all know that the RS6 C5 box aint the best and certainly is questionable after about 500 ft/lb of torque.
So what do you need to do if you were looking at 600bhp and about the same in torque??
What would be the perscribed upgrade for the box?

B5 RS4 box is what they are using at MRC...

I know what I will be doing if my gearbox ever goes pop :P

Would probably be followed by being sold to get some money back tho!

ACE torque converter and IPT valve body upgrade with MTM addition ATF coolers.

The manual gearbox is tricky. I know of only 1 that has been done (MTM club sport which I believe used a turbo'd S6 engine) .

The TCs tend to fail first. Like a slipping clutch - revs go up, but no increase in speed then it engages suddenly giving you a kick in the back. You'll know if it goes wrong.

Cool. Do the shafts ever go on these cars? From standstill up to about 5mph i get a very dull and quiet clunking / tapping noise. Hard to describe the sound but its a very quiet mechanical sound. Above 5mph its all normal. Its been the same since ive owned the car (3 years) and its never been picked up on services.

I heard that the RS6 gearbox was strong. The TC is the weak point. What tends to happen though is that the ATF degrades (especially with mod'd cars) and that's what kills the TC then shortly afterwards the box. This is why ATF changes are so important, especially on higher output cars.

I'd be extremely surprised if you had a gearbox problem and no other symptoms other than a slight knocking under 5mph.

It sounds more like a CV joint or Have you tried twisting your driveshaft by hand?

I think my box is sound (touch wood) and by inspection the joints are all fine. She is in for a 20k and box service in 3 weeks so i'll bring it up then. But im sure its fine.

I had the same on mine 2 years ago, from a standstill you would get this slight ting sound but that was the only sound, took it to my dealers and as a precaution they changed the propshaft, which did cure the noise, so must of been a faulty prop shaft.
