Thanks again for good feedback gents.

I am in Worthing, West Sussex. 20 Mins from Brighton.

Did look on map and emailed a guy in Crawley but have had no response.

Seems like a pretty good bit of kit to have if you have a car you really want to look after.

Initially get a cable from Ebay for 15 notes, you can buy that to get familiar with the system and then buy the real deal from RossTech.

This is gonna sound really stupid but here we go. If I can get a cable for 15 quid why would I then wanna spend £300 on another one? Does one do more than the other?

What about software to put onto the laptop?

The yellow RS4 is going into Glasgow audi today for a service.

Quite what they know about RS4's I have no idea. Maybe less than me! I guess its a chance to check for fault codes etc. Problem is with such a special low production machine I have very little faith. Having had a W124 500E for 9yrs I know all about limited vehicle ownership.

My main concern is that the previous owner has a couple of posts on here looking to buy about a bottom end or complete engine! This is making me need to visit the toilet more than normal! What the hell would he want with these items apart form the obvious and very worrying?!

Your thoughts please!

From what I had read, the ebay leads sounded temperamental and I would have ended up binning it, so have gone for the genuine article at just over £250. That price includes support and free software updates, and is a bit more than you would get with a bent copy.

My view was that I have two Audis at the moment, and will likely by another next time round. Even if I don't, these still appear to resell at a fairly good chunk of the original cost.

glasgow audi seem half decent, i have used them many a time with my old s3, and i was told by topbear that one of the workers has a b5 rs4 so i assume someone must know a thing or two about them. Is it just a service or is it getting a helth check etc?

the service will not do any fault code checks or pressure tests

only a service (fluids and filters) plus a visual check will be done...

the proper rosstech lead is forwards compatible as well (if you get the CAN bus one as linked) therefore can be used on any audi and sold on for a similar price in the end.

the ebay copy won't tell you what the codes mean and you need to do some jiggery pokey to get it to work on the laptop, the version if the shareware rosstech software is 409 vs 805 is the latest one, no support for later cars and not worth anything

for me it made sense to get the proper one

The ebay copy cable is fine for gathering codes and basic measurements like logging engine blocks etc...

15 notes and some free software ainb't bad at all.

I read through some of the previous posts from the owner and saw the bottom end and thought it was a bit weird. Also saw that he sold it to his mate too. Maybe he was the last owner before the current one. So it's a maybe 4 or 5 owner car this.

try putting a post on the srs forum, there are a few knowledgeable members from that neck of the woods that may help you, if i wasnt 3 hrs drive away id help you anytime, if you are serious about getting one of these cars then invest in a genuine vagcom lead from the outset. it will pay for itself many times over and the software is very easy to use. :D

Shane I'd love to!

Still very nervous about it though, plus I dont want to do a lot of F**king about to either find a pile of poo that I dont want or buy what turns out to be a pile of poo and get kicked in the wallet!

Spoke to him the other day and in passing mentioned to him about poss meeting at MRC. He didnt say no but understandably didnt want to spend time and money getting there for me to then say no!

It's gonna need a set of brakes too, so thats a BAG straight away! I'm not totally convinced that its worth all the money needing brakes. What about brake upgardes? Whats the costs there? I know for most stuff its super expensive! Who has done an RS6 conversion for example?
