Anyone Interested in a Short Drive?

Post by P_G » Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:16 pm

Say from London down to Davos, on to Stelvio and then Lake Garda?

I've promised myself next year that I would do a decent driving holiday and have thought about doing the Stelvio Pass a number of times. So rough thoughts are to get down to Dover, get on the Eurotunnel, across to Calais and blast down to Davos and stay there overnight. Then do the infamous Davis to Stelvio via Bormio, take pics, take in the view and then down to Lake Garda to stay overnight.

Then a few alpine roads and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, speed limit or not it would be fantastic with a tunnel full of RS4's. Then blast up thorugh France and stay somewhere near the French German border with the final day heading up to the Nurnburgring and then a quick jaunt back to the Eurotunnel.

I reckon 4-5 day dependent on how many miles need to be covered on a daily basis, but just wondered if anyone would be up for doing this around May time next year?

I did a similar trip this year... just keep in mind that Stelvio often isn't open until June (like this year).

If you approach from the north (Santa Maria Val Müstair) you climb up Umbrail Pass which is less hairpin after hairpin but narrower and largely without barriers/walls. The southern approach to Stelvio Pass has fewer turns, with most being on the northern side.
The whole region is just stunning but the weather is unpredictable with altitude though - at the top it was cloudy and raining, but a couple of turns down it was dry!

If you're so inclined (and I'm not suggesting anyone drink+drive), the Alto Adige wine region is an hour to the east (Bolzano/Merano and down for a bit)

I just think it would be mental to have a good number of Brits in their RS4's in convoy across Europe where our cars are appreciated. Oh and the noise! :rocker:

Yes I would definately do this depending on dates. Have done this run before with about 12 TVRs. Was brilliant.

Just a thought - Calais to Ingolstadt? In advance, aided by our dealer network (don't laugh), we could try to organise something official at the factory, then down to Davos etc.

Defiantley some good roads areound there. I took the Elise there a couple of years ago, and had a fantastic time.

If you can add it to your list, then I can also reccomend the road from Lake Como to St Moritz :D its higer speed than Stelvio, less cyclists, but still has that sublime mix of straights and hairpins.

Here's a little taster.......
