i try never to let it go below 1/4 full , to keep any crap in the tank away from fuel filter/ engine

Same here. Once you've had to remove a fuel tank to unclog it once, you learn forever.

I used to think this, but doesn't the fuel pump take from the bottom of the tank otherwise it would run out early. Purhaps I dont understand it though.

I have about two gallons when the DIS light comes on. The most fuel I have put is 78 liters
