Fuel tank capacity?

Post by GarethRS » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:58 pm

Hi all,

I drive to work today, 25 miles and my fuel guage was almost on the red and the miles remaining 85. Started the car up to come home and the fuel gauge was on the needle and the remaining miles was 0!

I decided to "risk" it and try my 25 miles home. I drove like a vicar and managed to get to my local garage and fill up. I filled up to the brim and got in just over 72 litres.

How big is the tank? I thought it was bigger, 80?

Thx

So I had 10 litres left and the gauges showed none!! I could have driven a bit faster then...

The moral of the story is that you should always drive faster.

IMHO the DIS always seems to start up with a lower range than when you switched off with... possibly due to high fuel consumption on cold start up.

On numerous occasions, you can start up with a low range and it creeps up as you drive, normally.

I should add that this is without ragging it before you switched off

yes its because when you parked up, your engine was warm and predicted range was based on a recent MPG, which on a warmed up engine is better

when you start the car, the engine is cold and so MPG will be lower....the revised range will therefore be lower (in your case zero)

I've experienced the exact same scenario...its quite disconcerting

I've once put £10 worth of fuel in and neither the range or the needle moved a milimetre - I thought i must have imagined it

Its annoying as it seems once it gets to what it thinks is empty and 0 miles, it doesn't go up, even if you drive like a vicar and coast down the hills.

Its really odd, i have done the same on my bike and i'm sure that the engine start to sputter, but it's just in my head, lol

I did once, in a moment of madness, when 1/4 of a mile away from the squirt supplier, give it large on the test track, i had done about 15 miles on 0, and once on the ttrack opened her up and just as i was passing 180 there was an almighty backfire or bang of some discription and the car started to slow, all the warning lights came on and the guy who was sat alongside started to smell funny.......
as soon as i had coasted to a sedate 50 mph, everything returned to normal for the last 20yds andall was good. My misses who was following (at some distance) said when we got to the pump, are you ok? What the blinking flip was that bang and why were there flames coming out of your exhaust.......
When i called Grizz and told him what happened, he sucked his teeth in a very expensive sounding fashion but settled for calling me a knob. when we checked on Vaginaintercom it said i had 12 faults logged, 2 were the cats which i knew about the other 10 where calling me a <beep> for running out of fuel........

I ran out of fuel on day when the DIS showing 40 beware. BTW I was driving like a vicar to try and see how many miles I could get on a tank.

Lesson learned for me. Don't trust it either way.

yeah it is pretty unreliable...all I know if when its in the red, I need to go to a pump and fill to the TOP, as it seems if I try to just put a bit here and a bit there, im going to the bloody pump for every journey !

what happened when you ran out....do you just put fuel in and away you go ?

It seems to vary how much will go in to what is shown on the guage too. The other day it was almost showing empty and only took 62 litres!!!
