Just checked my accounts.... Breakdown of costs as follows :
Insurance £1780 (I'm 30 with 3points, was car jacked 2 yr's ago, and car stolen via home robbery 3yrs ago)
Front Brake discs and pads x2- £1700
I did 18,000 miles in 1 yr so;
1st and 2nd service- £700
Tyres p zero - £800
Mitchelin PS2- £1000
Goodyr Asym- £700
Top up oil x6- £90
Finally fuel - £6800
(Oh and the essential milltek non res valves £1600 which I thought would be rude to add to my accounts- so actual amount is £15,170)
Crazy huh.....
Still love her though and will be hard to let her go

you'll regret it everytime you get in the Golf. (however £13.5K is quite alot, is depreciation in there too...ouch?)
I came from 4 years in a 987 Boxster S to a Mk5 R32 and missed the performance so much I went for an RS4 after 6 months in the R32...more practical than 911 but similar (ish) performance, slight trade off in handling but overall a better package for my personal requirements.
The R20 looks good but it is a Golf and will blend in with the other Golfs....well that's how I felt about my R32....which I loved by the way... but just didn't have the X Factor for me.
Maybe I am completely shallow/insecure/a knob but driving in a nice low volume car does it for me.......

In 18000 miles you've used a 2 sets more tyres than I have, your disks and pads cost £1050 more than I acquired mine for and at £6800 in fuel over 18000 miles at an average 111.9p for super unleaded you are getting less that 200 miles per tank!
I'd reckon by either remapping your car to get better fuel economy or a little less heavy in the right foot, sourcing your parts, tyres and oil elsewhere you''d save £3k on that every year anyway.
Insurance wise that's isn't good, I'm 35 with two non fault accidents against my name and Lady P_G is also insured on the car with 3xSP30's and we are both class I business usage for 12,000 miles for change under £700 so hopefully you should get a better deal than that next time round, even if you add a aprent, brother sister or wife to the policy.
Maybe you don't need to change the car, just how you run it
OK, just thought I'd do some sums....
Car bought new (Through the company) and now done 30K so here goes:-
Rough Depreciation £25K
Road Tax £910 (210, 300 & 400)
Insurance £1500 (£500 per year, company car fleet policy)
Tyres £2400 (Includes part worn winter tyres in the garage)
Brake Pads £450 (Fitted at 12,500 miles)
Service £700 (2 variable services)
Fuel £7,700 (car averaged 19.9 mpg since new)
Pads & discs £900 (Booked in for Tuesday so I'll count it)
Total £39560
or roughly £13.5 k per year
Now add the fact that I have paid company car tax on this at wait for it.....
£9,700 per year
(At least I am £3.8K up for the year)
I think I'd better go and lie down

Is the company your own?
If yes dont forget to factor Corporation tax relief on any interest paid financing if applicable, the class 1a on the bik, capital allowances at 3k a year and the fact that all those expenses have been offset against corporation tax.
Of course if it is not your company then yes it is horrendous.
If not then indeed it is horrendous.
My calculations don't include depreciation....
I know I'll miss my super estate but I think my wallet will not.
PG your calculations are correct with regards the fuel- I usually get approx 170 miles to a tank
I know some of you guys are getting better fuel consumption BUT if you drove the 34 miles round trip I do every day to work you would press the right pedal as hard as I do. 17 miles in 18 mins ! I know now you think I'm a hooligan

44 miles each way door to door, 55 minutes one way, 45 minutes on the way home. Trust me, I'm no slouch in my car either and don't hold back on using the gas but still manage between 260 and 300 miles per tank.
The fuel bit is the minor part, better prices on insurance, servicing and importantly parts would save you. Plus do you not get a rebate every year on mileage. I usually get beytween £6-900 per annum based on around 7-10,000 business miles.

I agree you are no slouch..... But I assume much of your mileage is motorway? Mine are all twisty country A road miles which destroy my tyres and lots of acceleration/deceleration, hence poor fuel economy. I will get a fixed price tyre and maintenance package on the R20 and continue destroying my tyres at VW finances expense. In this plan brake discs/ pads and clutches are all covered for the 3 yr plan.P_G wrote:44 miles each way door to door, 55 minutes one way, 45 minutes on the way home. This way I only have to pay for fuel and insurance

Ive got an R20 on order! Since my RS4 Ive gone to a 320+BHP ED30, which is an awesome bit of kit and once rolling is every bit as fast, if not faster than my RS - obviously doesn't have the sense of occasion though.
However I do miss the 4WD, so needs must!
Also the comment on the S3, Ive owned one and they are very boring, with a terrible steering feel. The Golf has a much sharper chassis, so should be an all round better drive.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: seriously considering se
the R20 will be a nice motor... I had Golfs before the S3 and then the RS4. I LOVED my R32, and it turned heads just as much as the RS4. I don't want to know how much my RS4 costs me a year, i love it but I know its time is limited... as running costs combined with a looming court case might mean I need to rethink in the near future, and even if that goes well, next year may be time to change...

Another comment on the S3 - they are good cars, but I agree with oli, the feel, the ride and the engine need some work... there are better hot hatches available today
